Lady Gaga: Fashion Icon of the Year

Say what you want about Lady Gaga’s fashion choices. Whether they intrigue or offend you, she is still the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s choice for Fashion Icon of 2011.

In her touching acceptance speech, she says, “Fashion made me feel like a star before I was,” according to E! Online.

And star she is. According to MTV, “Lady Gaga officially has the #1 album in the country [as of June 1], after selling 1,108,000 copies of ‘Born this Way’…the biggest sales week since 50 Cent’s ‘The Massacre’ released in 2005.” As for her second most recent album ‘The Fame Monster,” Metro.co.uk reports that her single “Bad Romance” was the most-played song of 2010 in the UK. Not only that, she also held the number three post with ‘Alejandro.’

Fashion icon, pop star phenomenon – and social networking guru, according to NewsFactor Network. Jennifer LeClaire reports: “Dubbed Backplane, the superstar is lending her creativity to building a social network aimed at the unique needs of entertainers and other celebrities.”

“Backplane will provide a platform and tools for communities to socialize and communicate on a more focused level,” Gaga’s business manager Troy Carter says.

Think this is a joke? According to NewsFactor Network, “Backlane has raised more than $1 million in venture funding led by Tomorrow Ventures, the venture firm founded by Eric Schmidt, Google’s executive chairman.”

“Backplane will do what Apple’s Ping doesn’t – integrate updates from Facebook and Twitter as well as other social sites,” Jennifer writes. “Carter reportedly listened to Jobs explain Apple’s music social network and decided he could do better.”

While that brainchild is still developing, check out the dress Mama Monster rocked on the flashy purple carpet last Monday.

Celebrity Mothers: Diaper Bag Dilemma

A good mother always puts her children first, but Handbag Heaven wants to put the mother first! We have oversized handbags that will work perfectly for carrying diapers, wipes and formula! For moms or moms-to-be, try our Meredith Leopard Handbag, South Beach Tote or our Broad Ripple Drawstring Satchel!

Miss Kate Hudson is pregnant with her second child. She and her fiance, Matthew Bellamy, are keeping the sex of the baby a secret from friends, family — and themselves. This past Sunday, Kate’s friend threw her a baby shower that featured gifts that are gender-neutral. Friends such as mommy Nicole Ritchie, Courteney Cox and Rachel Zoe showed up for the shower cake and gifts. The crew played a funny guessing game for baby names. I hope they don’t pick one of those hilarious celebrity baby names that makes no sense — or that will encourage other kids to laugh at them!

Since Kate will be packing for two kiddos, she will need a pretty large diaper bag. We suggest Kate uses the South Beach Tote. Its spice of color is great for the girl she believes she’s having, and it’s spacious enough for two kids — and even her own personal items!

Gwen Stefani needs a diaper bag more than ever! Her younger son, Zuma, recently broke his arm by falling off of a countertop. Is mommy not watching carefully enough? I’m sure she is, but you know how those little boys are! Even after getting a cast put on his arm, little Zuma and Mommy Gwen are still looking stylish. The only thing she is missing is a handbag to spice up that long dress! She can keep enough gear for Zuma and older son Kingston with her new Broad Ripple Drawstring Satchel bag!

Pop rocker Pink is a brand new mommy! She and Carey Hart were spotted at the beach on June 7 with 5-day-old Willow Sage. I guess Pink was sick of resting on the couch. The proud new parents showed off their newborn and maybe even got a couple rays of sun. She tweeted after the baby was born “We are ecstatic to welcome our new beautiful healthy happy baby girl, Willow Sage Hart. She is gorgeous, just like her daddy.”

Pink is missing something, though! A good diaper bag to carry all the goodies in. The best fit for Pink is the Meredith Leopard Handbag because she’s a rocker of course! The leopard print will keep her in tune with her singer side and will keep her baby items organized as well.

Idol Finalist Lauren Alaina’s Strength and Heart

The Cinderella story about the 16-year-old American Idol finalist, Lauren Alaina, almost caved in when she blew out a vocal chord during rehearsal for the final sing off.

According to People.com, Dr. Shawn Nassari said “her vocal chords were really rough and sprained, kind of like a runner with a badly sprained ankle. We gave her a lot of medicine.” However, when it came time to perform, Lauren said, “I’m here, I’m ready to sing. I’m fine, don’t worry about it.” People.com says her voice was hoarse but she soared and touched everyone with her performance of “Like My Mother Does.”

Though originally released in 2008 by Kristy Lee Cook, the sweet ballad is about a daughter who finds strength and inspiration in her mother who “taught [her] how to smile when things got rough.” Lauren embraced her own mother during the performance; hearts were on the floor.

The song must have meant that much more to Lauren after visiting tornado damage sites during her homecoming.

Lauren Alaina homecoming

Near Rossville, she met 11-year-old Tyler Long. According to People.com, Tyler was “thrown 200 yards from his family’s mobile home and managed to find and comfort family members, including his 8-year-old brother Connor and 10-month-old Ryder.” Tyler “lost his grandfather;” his mother who was “11 weeks pregnant lost her baby;” Ryder is “in the ICU with a bleeding brain, two broken arms and a broken leg.”

But Tyler was resilient as ever. “I felt scared and I prayed, but I just wanted to find my family first,” he tells Lauren.

“How can you be so brave?” she says. “You’ve got me crying, Tyler. I’m so proud to be from Georgia just like you.”

Georgia must be proud of Lauren, too, with her grace, class, and fierce fashionista style. One particularly eye-catching ensemble was the cranberry version of french novelty’s Hi Lo Leopard Tony Bowls Evening Dress.

Lauren was sans handbag onstage, but both our Delaney Leopard Wallet and Keegan Quilted Shoulder Clutch would have made perfect accessories for a post-Idol get-together. Complete your own leopard ensemble or add swag to a simple outfit today!

Tony Romo and Miss Missouri Candice Crawford Tie the Knot

Dallas Cowboys Quarterback Tony Romo and former Miss Missouri Candice Crawford tied the knot in Dallas, Texas at Arlington Hall on Saturday, May 28. The bride-to-be worked diligently with designer Rani Totman of St. Pucchi to create a dress that was all her own. And she certainly makes it hers with a Queen Anne collar and low-cut V neckline. Her girls sure got some attention from Romo on the day of the wedding!

The 100% satin ensemble made a big statement in Dallas with accented feathers, rhinestones and beads. Style Watch did an article called “Candice Crawford’s Whimsical Wedding Gown” about Candice’s wedding dress saying that she had already found the gown before Romo even popped the question. Designer Totman says, “It was an incredible experience watching the dress come to life on her.” She kept a photo of the dress and as soon as Tony asked her the words “Will you marry me?” she ordered the dress. Love or obsession? I can’t say, but I can say the dress is a stunning creation and it seems to fit her just like a glove…or just like her perfect-for-Candice designed wedding gown. The only thing she is missing is a clutch to hold her lip gloss and cell phone in case hubby Tony needs to reach her and her.

The Margaret Rhinestone Clutch is a good match for her because it’s a solid color, close to the dress but a little more bronze, so that the off-white isn’t overpowered with a black or bright colored clutch. The gold in the clutch would accent the design elements in her gown such as the feathers, rhinestones and beads. The clutch is perfect for any bride who is getting married in off-white! Get yours today, brides-to-be!

Emma Watson’s Midnight Rose Charms

Though she’s been the face of Hermoine Granger on the big screen for the past 10 years, Emma Watson steps out as herself with her new fragrance, Midnight Rose, by Lancôme Trésor.

Official reports that Emma was the new muse for Lancôme Trésor were released in March. Though this is her first collaboration with cosmetics, Emma had direct involvement with much of Midnight Rose’s design and advertising. “I was involved in the concept for the [ad] film and the tag line, ‘Catch my heart if you can,’” she said in an interview with Vogue, “The hat [in the ad] was my hat, which I bought at a flea market in Paris.”

Last month at the official release party, Emma wore this lovely black and white dress.

Stylish, classy and adorably feminine, the only thing that could have made this ensemble any better would have been our Antoinette Ruffle Bag.

With the option of an adjustable strap, Emma could have carried around this handbag as an over-sized clutch to balance out the black bow on her skirt or slipped it over her shoulder for greeting her admirers.

The perfume will be in stores in September. Writer Jaime Richards says it includes “notes of rose absolute, raspberry, peony, jasmine, pink pepper, and black-currant bud absolute.” As for Miss Emma? “I didn’t really like perfumes before because I thought they were heavy, but this one is really light and playful,” she says. “I feel lucky to embody a fragrance I am so crazy in love with.”

Practical Handbag Choices for Wedding Favors

Today’s guest post is from Jesse, who gives us the male perspective on handbags as wedding favors. Have you seen handbags used with wedding parties? Let us know in the comments!

Planning a wedding is a lot harder than it looks. When I got engaged, my fiancée and I decided that we’d split the duties of wedding planning evenly. Unfortunately for me, that means choosing wedding favors and gifts for our wedding party. Anyone who’s been a bridesmaid or groomsman knows the gifts can range from awesome to awful. When one of my buddies got married last summer, he handed us all flimsy-looking pocket knives. Mine broke into pieces during the reception when I tried to use it to open a bottle of beer. I guess it’s the thought that counts, right?

Shopping isn’t my favorite thing, but my honey promised that shopping online would make the mission quick and painless. We wanted to give our friends practical gifts, something they could use beyond just the reception. For my fiancée, that means giving her bridesmaids cute handbags.

Every woman’s style is different, but a tote or clutch that complements more than one outfit is a valuable item (as I’ve learned from my fiancée’s massive purse collection). After a few tries at picking handbags on my own, I was steered toward bags that are simple and stylish. My own knowledge of purses and handbags is much more limited than my fiancée’s, but I think my eye for fashion is getting sharper.

For daytime or the work week, canvas totes appear to be in style. A bag with a fun flowery pattern works for the office and for shopping trips. Clutches with a bit of flair or an eye-catching fabric are great for a night out, or an everyday catch-all for days when a larger bag might be too unwieldy to carry. The difference between day and night bags is a new concept to me, but it makes sense: if a woman is going out to dinner and dancing, why would she carry a big hobo bag? And if she’s heading to a business meeting, she’d need a purse or tote that can hold more than just a wallet and makeup bag.

We narrowed down our choices to two bags: a neutral-colored canvas tote and a glittery clutch with a removable strap. After spending time looking for wedding gifts for my fiancée’s bridesmaids, I feel like I have enough experience to get my future wife a pretty good handbag for our anniversary. Wish me luck.

Need some more help finding the perfect clutch for a wedding? Here are some more great finds from Handbag Heaven:

Ada Woven Clutch

The Ada is a lovely gift for your ladylike friends. The bow detail and woven texture remind us of Jackie O, and you just can’t get any classier than that!

Princess Clutch

If your wedding, or your wedding party, is more formal, then the Princess Clutch would be the perfect gift. The glossy bag is covered with rhinestones, which gives it some serious glam appeal! It also comes in beige, red, navy and purple.

Alex Metallic Floral Clutch

What’s more romantic than a wedding? This floral clutch evokes a touch of romance and elegance with a metallic sheen. Your bridesmaids would love this tote, and it looks gorgeous paired with several colors!
