Dress to Impress: Fashionable yet Professional

It’s job hunting season. Thousands of people are flocking to the internet to see what possible jobs could jumpstart their lives. The competition will also be heating up when college graduates enter the market in early May. So what can you do to set yourself apart and potentially grab your dream job? You need to dress to impress.

And in this market, a fancy ironed suit won’t cut it for interviews. To help spice up your outfit you need to add a tasteful, yet professional bag that demonstrates your qualified abilities.

Take for instance the Waverly Hobo handbag. It offers a modern look with its brass hardware and black leatherette body. The front also secures the bag with a hook and loop closure adding just the right amount of flare to this bag. It says I’m here and I’m ready to work.

The Hartford Patent Tote offers a completely unique alternative. This style offers a patent faux-snake leatherette design. It will add just the right amount of sophistication to any attire.

Would you rather don a briefcase-style carry-all? The Ashton Oversized Satchel would have you covered in that department. It has a smooth body design and opens on both sides with a single top buckle. This fashionable bag is offered in an array of colors and has an attachable strap, which allows it be easily matched to any outfit.

These classy bags offer a fashionable and professional look to any wardrobe. If you are heading to an important interview or to class, each bag will demonstrate how fashion forward you truly are. So what are you waiting for? Browse through the bags and see which one will lend you a push in the right direction!

Celebrity Style: Alexa Chung’s Studded Messenger Bag

British style icon and fashion “It Girl” Alexa Chung was a permanent fixture at this year’s London Fashion Week. Although the shows are over, fashion insiders are still buzzing about her military-with-an-edge look to the Burberry Prorsum show.

While military inspired looks are great for fall, Chung gives the outfit a girly touch with a metallic studded bag and brown booties.

To get Chung’s edgy messenger for a fraction of the price try the Mary Kate Studded Messenger.

It’s no secret studs are back full force on the spring runways, so now is the perfect time to add this studded fashion staple to your wardrobe.

The bag alone will promote you “It Girl” status.

Easy Style Update: Dos and Don’ts of the Middle Part

Forget the bold bangs and side parts of past seasons, middle parts have had a huge presence in Hollywood and on this year’s runways.

Celebrities from the Kardashians to the Olsen Twins have consistently sported the middle part, however, the style can be difficult to pull off. I myself sported a middle part until the age of 14 when I came to the realization I looked like the actor Barry Watson of 7th Heaven.

A middle hair part is currently bolder than a side part and can instantly update your look for fall. With a few tricks this fresh style can be worn by any one.

Do: Keep locks soft and away from the face. Try slight waves or curling hair with a large barrel curling iron for a more polished look.

Don’t: Keep your hair completely straight. The look is rarely flattering unless you have the face of Coco Rocha. You could also end up looking like a hippie or a guest star on That 70’s show.

Do: Part your hair slightly off-center. If you’re not ready to try a dead center part try parting hair slightly off to the side. An off-center part is more flattering for all face shapes.

Don’t: Slick your hair back with spray or gel. The look can be extreme. If you don’t want to deal with loose strand, you’re better off parting your hair down the center accompanied by a loose bun.

Do: Pair your new center part with an oversized bag! Follow Kim’s lead.

Hopefully, you too will take part in this trend. (No pun intended).

Staff Review: Wilson Shoulder Messenger Bag

You can't escape its adorableness.

Some bags are simply made for certain people. It’s neat what happens when the ideal owner-and-bag combination is found, because the two elements just look like they are made for each other.

I recently witnessed this exact phenomenon when my adorable boss decided to make the switch from her bubbly summer bag to her new, Wilson Shoulder Messenger Bag. (We like grey here, at Handbag Heaven.)

And no, that’s not a typographical error in the name. This bag is actually both.

I’ll wait as you marvel in its versatility.

Kay, come back. So my boss slips the Wilson on, cross-body, and it hits right below her hip, the most perfect little messenger bag I’ve ever seen.

Its square shape allows for plenty of room, without looking like you’re hauling textbooks and your 15-inch Toshiba from 2004. And the rouched ruffles add plenty of visual interest and keep the bag looking “pretty,” and not just functional.

Speaking of those ruffles, I wanted to point out that your eyes are not deceiving you; that IS zipper detailing on the “hem,” I suppose, of those ruffles, which just ups the cool factor even more.

The ideal size for a cross-body or a shoulder bag, the Wilson is great for anyone. It comes in a deep grey and a vivid robin’s egg blue, so it’s perfect for a neutral OR a fun pop of color.

How Many is Too Many?

lots of purses
How many purses do you have? Come on…You can tell me. It’ll be our little secret.

How many do I have? Oh clever…how about I’ll tell you after you tell me? Deal?

Ladies, is it a hidden secret or a common knowledge that purses are addicting? It’s beyond easy to binge and own several handbags, but how much is really enough?

The truth of the matter, there is NO RIGHT NUMBER! That’s it. It depends on you as a person and your wallet. Can you afford to buy a purse a month? A week? Then go for it…Now if you’re putting your family in debt with your purse habit, then you may want to rethink your priorities, but having multiple purses if you can afford to holds no harm.

Granted, thousands upon thousands of purses is a little sick…And some celebrities, like Mariah Carey and others who own every damn purse imaginable, are slightly sickening…but dipping into the ‘ol pocket book to grab another holds no danger in my eyes.

Generally the average woman owns at least three purses, but more often than not, women will hoard 5-10. This is not devastating…Unless you don’t have somewhere to store them…

Ladies, if your man is giving you gripe about your handbags, tell him, it’s your thing. Sports, beer or Nintendo are his, purses are yours.

Now go get yourself a new handbag!

Staff Review: Maria Canvas Tote

Not all purchases are made because the buyer thinks they will last forever. I’m not going to pretend those teal five-inch stilettos are supposed to be timeless. But in the case of the Maria Canvas Tote, some items are meant to stick around for a while.

the patent makes it "naughtycal"

This nautical bag is perfect in so many ways. It has a simple shape with which no one can find issue, and the detailing is life-completing. Now, there’s not a lot going on, but the details that are there are classic and fully appropriate.

Available in either black or pink embellishment, the Maria’s main feature is the canvas. And this isn’t one of those boring canvas bags snobbily carried around by the in-your-face “eco” crowd. It’s actually cute. Really cute.

The cool, patent material balances the simplicity of the canvas, a combination unmatched in the race for fabulous nautical fashion.

Not only is the tote about the sweetest casual bag you could ever hope for, it has a little, matching clutch to go with it! You cannot resist the perfection.

What Bag Should I Take to School?

Back to school, back to school.. to prove to dad I’m not a fool. Got my backpack on, got my shoes tied tight, I hope I don’t get in a fight.

Okay, every time I think about back to school, I think about Billy Madison. But we’ve got bigger fish to fry today than whether shampoo or conditioner is better. Although it’s shampoo, of course.

So here I am, a junior in college, I’ve been going to school for the past 15 years of my life and I still can’t decide whether I should carry a backpack, messenger bag, satchel, etc to school. Can anyone help?

kids with backpacks

Elementary School
Back in the day of Lisa Frank and trapper keepers, we were all about backpacks. But now, I’m working at an elementary school and my kids are starting to get all hip with their messenger bags. First graders, for real? Don’t they know that they need to distribute the weight that their school bag holds evenly between both shoulders? I was always a backpack girl.

Middle School
This is when we all got trendy and vicious. Everyone was trying to be cool and oversized handbags were the jive. You were so cool; it was like carrying a purse to school. I think I tried to rock a messenger bag once, but this nerd carried every book under the sun with her…so I switched back to a backpack.

kids with messenger bags
High School
We didn’t care about trying to be cool anymore. It was all about function and surviving throughout the day. Backpacks all the way!

College
So what do you take to college? Well, I started off my freshman year with an oversized handbag, but that got old really fast. I guess I’m a backpack kind of girl. My shoulders don’t end up hurting and I can stash everything I need into all of the pockets.

So what do you guys think? Handbag or backpack?

Staff Review: Simpson Checkbook Wallet

There is something intimate about wallets that separates their feel from our handbags. We take a lot of pride in our handbags because they are right in the open for everyone to see.

But wallets are a quieter manifestation of style. It’s likely you don’t know what most of your friends’ wallets look like, where you can describe, in detail, their main handbag. Bags are part of your outfit;wallets are part of your soul.

Maybe I’m looking too deep into this, but I feel like a conscious decision made on a wallet is one not taken lightly.

white checkbook wallet metal detail

so functional, it hurts

One good decision is this muted wallet. It’s always drawn my eye, with no effort on its style’s part. This checkbook wallet is very simple, very minimal, but I can’t help but love it.

So functional it hurts, the Simpson Checkbook Wallet has every little pocket you’ll need for your identification, plastic, gift cards, receipts, and pictures of your favorite babies. It will work with everything you could wear, and just exist quietly, the definition of understated chic.

Staff Review: Elgin Studded Handbag

There are things in life one just needs. I’m not talking about water, eats, et cetera. I’m talking about those items-be they shoes, a Land Rover (Discovery, not the LR2′s, of course), a certain someone’s face-one craves without reason.

neutral studded clutch

silly amounts of studliness

As soon as I saw the Elgin Studded Handbag, I needed it. The shape and size is perfect for carrying in-hand and under-arm, but what’s amazing is the versatility of the style. To me, the Elgin is meant first for clutching. But with two included straps, the clutch can be worn over the shoulder, across the body like the tiniest messenger bag you’ve ever seen, or (brace yourself) around the waist.

Yep. This studded clutch also works as a hip bag, a fanny pack, or even… a chaos pouch, if you will.

It’s a good thing the Elgin is so hip.

The front flap of the bag is covered in color-paired studs that form neat rows, keeping the look tidy, despite the multitude of studdery. Or studliness.

dark studded clutch

the hippest.

Available in two neutral color options, the leatherette feels really thick, and is face-rubbingly smooth. It’s a very specific feeling. It just means you’ll probably want your pretty face to get a feel of the clutch too. With over 100 studs (yeah, I counted) and the plush material, this bag is a bit weighty for its relatively small size. But I kind of like it. As usual, I like my bags’ presence, so the more I feel, the better.

I wouldn’t call this studded clutch perfect, life-completing, everything you could want in clutch/hip/cross-body bag form, or even a permanent and consistent smile-inducer, but… I won’t object if you do.

It’s small, but it’s FIERCE!

The Bachelorette: Who’s Got it in the Bag?

The moment you’ve all been waiting for is here - the most dramatic rose ceremony ever! After wannabe-screenwriter Frank performed his monologue about how leaving Ali to be with his ex was breaking his heart, and disappeared into the sunset, Miss Fedotowsky found her final two, by default. While there is still speculation that this season of The Bachelorette concludes with Ali ridin’ solo, I can’t help but wonder who of the remaining two has the advantage…

Full Name: Roberto Martinez
Age:
26
Profession: Insurance Agent
Currently Resides In: Charleston, SC
What he likes to do for fun: Hang at the beach with a boat, guitar, dominos and good people
Gimmick: He’s a baseball player. While the truth of the matter is that he was a college pitcher with a 7.20 ERA (for those of you who aren’t up on baseball stats that is not good), ABC refuses to pass up an opportunity to dress him in a baseball uniform or show him pondering his love for Ali while tossing the ball around. Their reasoning behind this? See: Secret Weapon.
Secret Weapon: Umm have you seen him? Enough said.

Full Name: Chris Lambton
Age: 33
Profession: Landscaper
Currently Resides In: Cape Cod, MA
His biggest achievement to date: Teaching New York City high school kids for five years, and making a difference
Gimmick: His tight-knit family. Overcoming adversity trumps all, and if you do so by remaining loyal to your family - bonus points for you! Chris lost his mother not too long ago and not only has this made him a stronger person, it’s given him something to talk about in every. single. episode.
Secret Weapon: His name. Yes, this lucky bachelor was blessed with the same name as everyone’s favorite host, Chris Harrison. That can’t be a bad thing!

While I’d like to see her choose sweetheart, Chris, I have a hunch that Roberto is going to be flying his W flag high. After everything that went down with Frank, I wouldn’t be surprised if Ali chooses lust over love. Plus seriously, have you seen Roberto?

What do you think Ali will decide? And better yet, who do you think will be the next Bachelor?
