Building a Handbag Wardrobe

Today’s guest blogger is Alexandra Suhner Isenberg, the editor of Searching for Style, an insightful look into the world of fashion. Alexandra knows her stuff - after studying fashion in Paris (aren’t you jealous?), Alexandra worked at Sonia Rykiel and Burberry as a designer. She then went on to run her own lingerie company and to earn her MA at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. Today she’s here to give us her expertise on building the perfect collection of handbags.

I have always been a one-bag girl, splurging on one luxury bag and then using it everyday for two years. At the moment I am in a transition phase: my Dior Rebel bag is falling apart, and since I haven’t been inspired by anything else, I am in bag limbo, using an old Bree leather bag my Mom gave me. One bag almost everyday for two years works fine when you are just going back and forth to work, but I certainly don’t depend on that one handbag for everything. That’s where the handbag wardrobe comes in… so when I have a party, a dinner, a concert, or a weekend away, I have a selection of appropriate bags to choose from.

Building the right collection of handbags is very important. We all have a favourite style or shape, but it doesn’t mean you want a closet full of them. There is a time and place for everything, and so here is a list of the essential bags one needs in order to have the perfect handbag wardrobe. The Everyday Bag: This one is up to you. I prefer a satchel or hobo style - it HAS to go over my shoulder and have pockets for things like phones, keys, USB sticks, etc. It has to be durable and versatile, so I usually go for brown or black. Some people like to carry just their wallet and essentials, other like to carry around their kitchen sink. Choosing the right everyday bag is very personal, and should depend on your needs. This one is also a bag that’s is worth splurging on, especially if you use it everyday: you want great quality, and you’ll get your money’s worth, even if it is expensive. For the everyday bag, I like the Fulton Satchel, with its big outside pocket, or the Madison Messenger Tote.

The Classic Evening Bag: A staple in every woman’s closet. I like to have something a bit dressy and shiny, and I usually go for black, so it can go with most cocktail dresses and won’t clash with shoes. I’d go for the Katie Patent Clutch, or something similar with a chain strap.

Classic Evening Bag - The Katie Clutch

Job Interview Bag: If you are like me, and you end up trashing your everyday bag, it is good to have a backup for important meetings and interviews. Buy something timeless, so it doesn’t go out of style too quickly. The Clayton Patent Bag is a good one; it looks good, without being over the top.

Laptop Bag: I don’t like laptop bags, so it is always a struggle to find a bag that fits my laptop but doesn’t scream “I am carrying a laptop!” I like to find an everyday bag that can squeeze in my laptop if necessary, but when I am carrying paperwork too, a great tote or shopper bag, like the Heather Patent Stud Tote, will work perfectly.

The Fun Evening Clutch: I never used to be a fan of clutch bags, until I moved back to Vancouver. When you are living in London, you are always worried someone is going to steal your bag, so a clutch doesn’t make sense. But now that I have a car again, and I am living in Vancouver, I have started using clutch bags. The Eliza Wristlet Clutch is a perfect fun clutch. I can dress it up and wear it in the evening, or pair it with jeans and take it out during the day. It is big too…there is nothing worse than a clutch that can’t even fit a smartphone (most of my vintage ones are like that. They were made before the smartphone was!), so I can fit all my essentials into it.

By the way, make sure you check out my review of the Eliza Wristlet Clutch and then enter my giveaway to win your own!

Check Searching for Style for updates on the contest.

The Oversized Bag: Everyone needs a very big bag with a zipper when you are traveling heavy. This bag can go to work and then the gym, on an overnight trip, or as a carry on bag. Make sure it has a zipper and fits over the shoulder for ease of carrying. Check out the Tessa Oversized Tote.

Messenger Bag: When I am going to a concert or when I am know I am going to be walking a lot, I like to have a messenger bag. The Charlotte Sling Bag is a small one that fits whatever you need for a music festival or a day out.

Messenger Bag - The Charlotte

Weekend Bag: I like the Zebra Print Duffle Bag, because it is fun, has a zipper, and can fit whatever is necessary for a weekend away. I have a similar version in plain black, too, depending on how I am traveling. Zebra print is fine for a personal trip, but if I am traveling for business overnight, I prefer something a bit more discreet.

The rest… A collection of eight bags is never going to satisfy me, so here are a few more you may want to consider adding to your handbag wardrobe. A rock chic bag: When you are feeling a bit rock’n’roll, check out the Hudson Oversized Clutch. A Summer Everyday Bag: I like to change my everyday bag for the two or three months of high summer. My everyday bag is always black or brown, so I like something colourful and a bit more fun for the summer months. I like the Ava Chain Handbag. A Basket: Great for farmer’s markets or picking flowers. A Fringed Bag: For when you are feeling a bit hippy…. Something a Bit Novelty: Maybe you only bring it out once or twice a year, but a girls has got to have a few fun pieces in her wardrobe. Try the Greta Kisslock Satchel, the Brianna Soft Flower Clutch, or the Cheetah Print Tassle Bag.

Is Your Purse Organized?

Purse Organizers

There are many options!

Are you an organized person? How about your purse? Is that organized? In my world, I am an organized person that loves pockets and has a place for everything…but my purse, another story. Tell me if you’re like me…You decide to switch purses, you know, change things up a bit. You toss all the old receipts, smushed gum, and clean out your make-up/feminine toiletry kit you carry. You re-organize your wallet, balance your checkbook and begin the purse transformation. Then, you make the switch. Everything is in its place. Your wallet is organized, your pockets are filled correctly and you feel good!

…Then…A week later, when you’re running late, or your phone is ringing, or you need a tampon, you’re stuck digging through a now disaster of a purse, in a hurry, panicking, trying to find whatever it is that you desperately need, i.e. keys, phone, tampon…You get the point.

“So why not keep it organized all the time?!” you think to yourself. Then you secretly vow to yourself that you will forever keep your belongings organized and neat. (Until the next time you’re running late and you can’t find your keys…)

Well ladies, I am here to give you the 411 on purse organization. Have you ever heard of a little thing called a purse organizer? You know, those wacky infomercials that make organization look like a breeze? Do they really work?

Well ladies, reviews rave that they do! (Granted, you are the one responsible for keeping your items stored in the organizer properly…it can’t do it for you!) These organizational saviors are clutch for your purse! They will securely store a planner, keys, cell phone, a notepad, toiletry items, hand sanitizer and more! Organization = No more messy purses! I seriously suggest investing in one of these handy helpers!

Ladies, if you have the will power and are tired of digging through your clutter catch-all satchel, then do look into one of these purse organizers. Why not make life a little easier?!

Happy organizing!

How Many Ways Can I Carry This Bag?

Probably my favorite purchase from France was a new grey handbag that I got. Why? It’s adorable. It’s huge. And it can be worn different ways. I can put both handles over my shoulder or I can adjust it…and BAM! I now have an over the shoulder bag, which was great for going out at night/riding the subway. Anything with multiple uses or multi-carry options is amazing. Since I know that you agree, I am now going to show you a Handbag Heaven bag that you should probably consider owning.

Dakota Convertible Backpack from Handbag HeavenThe Dakota Convertible Backpack might be my favorite bag of the moment. You can just pull the strap through the top to wear this as an over the shoulder bag or a backpack – whatever strikes your fancy at the time. There’s a zippered pocket on the outside and inside, as well as two open pockets on the inside.

and the inside lining view, love it!

Do you love this bag? Well, I have great news! There’s plenty more like it at Handbag Heaven! You should probably get yourself a handbag with multiple carrying options; it would be a very wise choice.

Bagology 101

People always say that your clothing is a reflection of your personality but have you ever wondered what your handbag is saying? If so, you’re not the first. In 1945, Anita Daniel published an article in the New York Times addressing the science (yes, science) of bagology. According to the article, a woman’s handbag is of extreme importance. It’s the key to her real self; the prosaic answer to many poetic conceptions. Deep stuff, right?

So get out a notebook and a number two pencil. It’s time for a little Bagology 101:

Backpack - The backpack-carrier says to the world that she is a practical and genuine person. She is always prepared and not concerned with what others think of her.

Clutch - A woman with a clutch is confident in who she is. She doesn’t feel the need to carry her entire life with her and isn’t afraid to ask a companion to hold any belongings that won’t fit in her clutch.

Under the Arm- The woman who carries her handbag under her arm is seen as the definition of sophistication and class.

Oversized / Tote - Carrying an oversized or tote bag says that you’re a busy bee but also practical and prepared. Those with an oversized/tote are seen as fun-loving and personable.

Fabrics and Frills - It’s not just the style of bag you carry but also its distinguishing features that speak about your personality. Knit bags give off a warm and artsy vibe, whereas metal accessories signal someone with a rebellious streak. Sequins and sparkles are generally worn by those who like to be the center of attention whereas neutral colored bags say that you’re friendly and approachable.

Now that you’ve taken the course, it’s time for a pop quiz… Do you agree with these bagology diagnoses? What do you think your handbag says about you?

Gisele Bundchen’s Back on the Runway!

Gisele Bundchen's Puse

Photo: PursePage.com

She’s back ladies and gentlemen! The catwalk is beaming again now that Gisele Bundchen has returned! Post preggo, she has returned to the fashion scene having already dropped the 30 pounds she gained during her pregnancy! This beauty’s weight-loss process took a whopping three months, her body has already returned to its normal shape (due to “muscle memory,” as she claims) …AND, on top of everything, her entire delivery was pain free!

So do we start cringing with jealousy now?! Well, despite her over-all perfection – body, baby, husband and all – let’s discuss her fashion sense. This, ladies, we can achieve ourselves! Do you love Gisele’s style? How about that rocking handbag she’s carrying above?

If you dig her digs, then may I present to you…our Fiona Shoulder Clutch! Straight from the runway! (Our runway anyway..)

Fiona Shoulder Clutch

Fiona Shoulder Clutch

Yes, the words shoulder and clutch are rarely seen in the same title, but this functional bag works great as an evening purse, or an oversized clutch. The long chain straps are attached, but do dangle nicely when carrying the Fiona by the handles, or under your arm.

This lovely lady has soft fringe, like Gisele’s, and is adorned with golden hardware. This accentuates the rich jet black color of the leatherette, while the back of our Fiona includes a handy zippered pocket for that frequently used cell phone! The inside holds two open top pockets and one zippered pocket for stashing smaller items like your keys.

So she has a gorgeous body, a rich life style and amazing handbags…You can too! Well, get the handbag at least!

How To Clean Your Handbag

Savannah Cargo Bag from Handbag Heaven

Savannah Cargo Bag

I don’t know about you, but when I wear a handbag, I really wear it. At first I feel fabulous sporting a brand new bag. I carry it with pride. But after a while, a few nights on the floor, a few parties and perhaps a run-in with the trunk of my car it starts to look dingy. Does anyone else have this problem? Well, I’m going to assume that you’re nodding your head, and tell you how to clean your handbags, whether you want to know or not. HA!

1. Most importantly, follow any care instructions that came with the purse.

2. Take everything out. Once the contents are out, shake the purse out to cleanse it of any dirt or debris. If you’re like me, the purse will have crumbs, pencil lead and a lot of other miscellaneous items. (because I’m kind of gross)

3. For fabric purses, have them dry cleaned or hand wash them in warm water with a gentle detergent.

4. For leather purses, use leather cleaner. ATTENTION: Most of Handbag Heaven’s bags are leatherette. Do not use leather cleaner on leatherette bags. That could damage the exterior of your handbags.

5. Wipe vinyl or plastic purses with a clean damp cloth.

6. Silk handbags? Dry cleaner’s trip, for sure.

For special tips on cleaning leatherette handbags from Handbag Heaven, see this blog. For future reference to keep your handbag clean, be sure pens are capped before storing them. Keep your makeup in a makeup bag and stash snacks in Ziploc baggies to avoid crumbage.

Staff Review: Leopard Print Pleated Bag

This is the bag I’m not supposed to love. Why? Because it’s an animal print. And I don’t like animal print.

huge leopard print bag

forbidden love

But the Leopard Print Pleated Bag makes me do that scrunched-shoulders, talking-really-fast, weird-scratchy-voice, wobble-side-to-side thing people do when they just love something so much.

Oh, you guys don’t do that? … No, it’s fine. Never mind.

Whenever I start talking about this leopard print bag, I start gushing. I’ll try to keep it succinct.

First, it’s huge. This bag is THE perfect size for day-to-day or when you take a weekend outing on the boat. I think its size is what makes the print okay. Because its not afraid to be oversized and in-ya-face, it’s proving the animal print is not tacky-it’s chic.

Second, the leatherette is really soft in a world where animal print bags are easily plastic-feeling. This is a necessity. The pleating of the fabric adds enough visual interest to keep the bag from looking plain, yet the lack of extraneous detailing sticks with the chic, less-is-more vibe.

Third, the handles are extremely ladylike, which, though it may not be the most convenient set-up, I adore.

Fourth, it’s huge. I already said that. But I’m telling you. This bag is awesome.
