Weekly Blogosphere Roundup

(credit: whorange.net)

(credit: whorange.net)

Holy cow, it’s almost February. And we know how quickly that mini-month goes by, so really, it’s almost March, which I have no problem considering as Spring, so it’s BASICALLY almost warm outside!

Right?? Anyone? No…?

Alright, it’s still winter. But one thing that isn’t completely depressing and happiness-hiding about it is that you carry a handbag all year long! So, while you may retire your boots in Spring, your jackets in summer, your flip-flops in Fall, handbags flow through all weather, sticking with you while you don your winter wardrobe.

Yay.

So how do we feel about guys carrying bags? I mean, it’s not like any man boy in his right mind would carry an actual handbag, but some bags offered to men seem to be pushing it a little. I’d prefer my guys ponder not what shape, size, color, and season their bag should be, but rather, “Can I fit all my stuff in it? Will my hands be free to shoot guns and wrassle aligators? Awesome.”

When it comes to my thought process behind deciding on bags, I can go for hours. It’s a big decision. And it’s always helpful to get insights from your frans! (Jessica Alba and I? Totes bests.)

Another bestie of mine is Her Highest, Ms. Stefani Joanne Germanotta. I just wish all my friends came in Barbie form. Then I’d always have a plaaaay daaaate.

And you wouldn’t buy a skirt without asking your friends first if it looks good on you.

(Ten points if you can finish the next two lines after that quote.)

I don’t know if you caught this update on twitter, but ho.lee.cow. What the awful IS that?

Speaking of awful, I found something pretty impressively facepalm-esque over at our girl Winona’s blog. (Insert “i can haz” reference here.)

No. Winona is amazing. She keeps us laughing with photogs of some amazingly bad fashion, and we love her for it. She’s a giver that way.

Thanks for reading. Keep it real, rockstars. (I feel like a new anchor with that sign off. You stay classy.)

Wednesday Q&A: N+S of Stuff Under Twenty

N+S are back this week to give us some insight on styling in a statement piece. Here, they focus on the ever elusive blue handbag. Best friends and co-founders of the fantastically frugal website, Stuff Under Twenty, these ladies know their stuff, so listen closely.

When we first got the Addison bowler bag, we relegated it to the awesome!-but-not-so-much-for-every-day corner of the closet (there’s a big pile there!). However, as time passed, we were surprised how frequently we reached passed the supposed dailywear bags to the bright blue of the Addison again! It’s definitely a statement piece, but its distinctly classic shape makes it just conservative enough to blend in with any outfit. Here are some of our favorite ways to wear it, and in keeping with the mission statement of our blog Stuff Under Twenty, each item is twenty bucks or less!

…………………………………………………………………….

Outfit One: Super Casual

1

Everyone has those days they automatically reach for the gray in their closet (right? not just us?). There’s something comforting about slipping into shades of neutral on those Mondays and Wednesdays and sometimes those rainy Saturdays. Here’s an outfit for you to dress gray but look bright! Pair skinny cords (Delias.com, $19.99) with an adorable striped sweater (AE.com, $19.95) over a plain black long-sleeve tee (OldNavy.com, $12). Throw on a fun pair of earrings (OldNavy.com, $8.50), grab your bowler bag, and go.
…………………………………………………………………….
Outfit Two: Ultra Glam

2

After a bunch of those Mondays and Wednesday and Saturdays, you’re gonna be itching to go glamorous (at least we are). Here’s an outfit for one of those days when you can pull off anything. A fantastic dress (VictoriasSecret.com, $19.99) cinched with a big belt (Forever21.com, $7.80) and paired with amazing tights (Forever21.com, $5.80) should do it. Go overboard by adding a bib necklace (CharlotteRusse.com, $15.50). Don’t forget your bag!

…………………………………………………………………….

Outfit Three: Business Casual

3

And there are the betweens, right? The ones that most days end up being? Go with simple colors and soft fabrics. A pair of cozy flared brown pants (NYandCompany.com, $19.97) and a white rib knit sweater (Gap.com, $17.99) is a sure bet. Add a funky pair of sunglasses (Alloy.com, $5.99) and your bag and you look like you spent a heck of a lot more time putting yourself together than you actually did!

Hope you’ve been inspired, one way or another. Visit us at Stuff Under Twenty for more affordable goodies!

New Merch Monday: Zebra Print Campus Hobo

In need of a little adventure? Grab the Zebra Print Campus Hobo and don’t look back! It’s the perfect sidekick to bring along for the ride. This stylish, oversized hobo has plenty of room for all your essentials. Coated in a classy jet black and creamy zebra print, and highlighted with pink leatherette and polished silver hardware, this bag is definitely a frisky find. However, the hobo’s slightly textured feel and contrasting stitching is what truly sets it apart from the norm. You can literally feel the quality at your fingertips, and believe me, it feels good.

Whether you’re draping this bag over your shoulder, or swinging it over your elbow, the Zebra Print Campus Hobo will not let you down. The durability of the shoulder strap makes for some serious comfort, at a seriously affordable price. It also has amazing quality and sustainability, leaving a long-lasting impression in your closet for years to come!

The inner lining of the bag is a rich burgundy-brown, revealed by a sturdy top zipper. Once opened, a long zippered pocket, along with three open top pockets rest inside. Slots are available for organizing your smaller essentials. An additional zippered pocket is located on the back of this amazing bag for easy access to anything from your lipstick to your ipod.

Convinced yet of your wild side? If not, prepare to be very soon. Handbag Heaven also offers smaller matching items, such as the Zebra Print Trimmed Wallet, if you’re looking for an amazing duo.

My advice? Book this bag, and pack it up! The designer-style safari ride won’t wait around forever. With the Zebra Print Campus Hobo’s limited availability at a new an improved price ($37.95), I think you know what to do.

All Aboarddd and Buckle Up!!!

Weekly Blogosphere Roundup

Twas a big week, my friends. Johnny Depp was named most stylish man in the world by GQ, rumors swirled that Marissa Miller lost her wings, and Golden Globes attendees’ stylists’ dress choices were bashed by fashion big wigs everywhere. And most significantly, I gave in to the the birdie tweeting on my shoulder and joined the legion of moderately self-obsessed techies. #itsabouttime

Studly. My obsession for all things studded is growing with each passing day. It may or may not be spiraling out of control…

Me: …but, you see, if I just studded the trim of our pillows that totally wouldn’t interfere with sleeping and it would be SO Alexander Wang.

Boyfriend: No.

This weekend I’m planning on trying a DIY studded belt a la Carrie. While I’m at it, I may attempt this very cool ribbon necklace project Girl Friday posted this week. Very “Givenchy Fall ’07 RTW meets Secret Garden.”

Confessions. I posed for cheerleading squad pictures and vowed my love for Usher in my Sophomore year of high school. Nathan Gerard began working on his first collection, which he released by his senior year. Nathan is cool. I am not. Find out more about this prodegy in his interview with Ashley at Alice in Stilettos. His dresses are truly amazing. I’d like to marry this one, naturally.

Sequin in my Tea. The year is still fresh and if you’re still looking to shake up your style iCiNG gives a decilously imagtive 2010 style direction option. With essential components including “fabulously ridiculous leg-wear”, “a multitude of completely over-the-top head-wear”, “fingers loaded up with rings” and “super-long false eyelashes hidden by statement sunglasses”, what’s not to love? I’m in.

Save Me. Satiate your drive for frugality at Top Savings, a website devoted purely to saving you case via coupon and sales tip-offs.

Don’t forget to enter our ‘Grab our Button‘ giveaway for a chance to win a exclusive handbag. Because really, what’s life if it’s not about making your friends jealous by snagging something they can’t have?

Have a fierce weekend!

Wednesday Q&A: N+S of Stuff Under Twenty

Handbag Heaven would like to offer a warm welcome to our guest bloggers for the week, the stylish (and slightly mysterious) duo known only as N+S. Best friends and co-founders of the fantastically frugal website, Stuff Under Twenty, these ladies make it their mission to collect great deals to share with their readers. I dare you to visit their website and NOT find something you love! Here the ladies give us their take on the world of handbags.

1. Tell us a little about current handbag trends.

S: I love the move to smaller purses right now. It’s definitely time we moved past those shapeless sacks two times as wide as the person carrying them. I’m drawn a little bit to the great new cross-body bags that are on the upswing in terms of trendiness. It’s nice to see simple, classic no-hands bags with a built-in “stop putting stuff in me!” sign.

N: I agree with S and definitely like the no-hands bag idea - but I gotta say, I love the ruffles look, too! It’s usually not my style, but a big ruffly clutch can be just what you need to make a sophisticated outfit pop just a little. Also, I’m loving the red bags that seem to be emerging everywhere - a big dark red leather tote? I’m getting goosebumps just thinking about it.

2. What is your personal purse style?

S: I have two purs-onalities (groan!). My work purse style is very large and structured, with endless pockets and clippy things on the inside, but streamlined and goes-with-anything on the outside. Maybe to combat that, my play purse style leans toward very, very small clutch. I’ve had phases where I’ve just carried a hinge wallet that can pass for a clutch!

N: I love big briefcase-meets-tote bags. Just one big zipper and two handles that you carry around - those are fantastic to me, and hold just about anything I could need or want. But of course, all our Stuff Under Twenty readers know we’re both big clutch fans. A small simple clutch with a snap lock top but also a space for credit cards gets me through just about any event or day of the week.

3. What’s in your purse, always?

S: Oh man. The big purse holds my laptop, a notepad, 4 pencils and 2 pens (can you tell I’m a little anal about this?), a phone charger, a laptop charger, iPod shuffle and headphones, lip balm, fix-it supplies for daily emergencies, my wallet, my phone, my keys, and always, always, a bar of dark chocolate. The little one holds cash, my cards, and that’s it!

N: My wallet, phone, keys, iPod and lip balm!

4. What advice would you give someone struggling with which handbag to choose?

S: I think a lot of people think a handbag doesn’t have to coordinate with their outfits. And while I’m not advocating for matchy-matchy style, you’re just going to end up using it less if you find it doesn’t go with anything. Maybe this advice is extreme, but I’d say either go to the blends-in side or the stands-out side of the spectrum. On the blends-in side, look for neutral colors (black or brown, but sometimes a good metallic), structured, medium-sized purses without too much extra details. Then let your outfits do the talking. On the stands-out side, go for a statement color (I love yellow and red), an unusual shape, and lots of details (exposed zippers, studs, whatever floats your boat). Your outfits will take a back seat but your purse will shine!

N: Go with a classic. Imagine opening your closet and viewing everything in it, and then pick one bag that goes with maybe 10 of the things you wear the most. Go with a classic style as well as color - a structured tote, a simple over the shoulder bag in leather that holds the essentials plus a little something. You definitely need classic handbags in your wardrobe if you don’t have them already!

5. Tell us about your blog. What do you hope to accomplish with it?

Stuff Under Twenty is a shopping blog for the rest of us. We hunt down the stuff - from the big retailers to the tiny independents - that you don’t need to delay gratification for. We feature everything from apparel to art to housewares, we host frequent giveaways, and we love, love, love hearing from our readers! And best of all: everything we post is under $20! Here’s some more background on us!

6. Is there anything else you’re dying to share?

Thanks for the opportunity to share and be sure to check out our site!

Top 10 2010 Golden Globe Looks

Did you check out the Golden Globes on Sunday? If you said yes, you’re a super star. No? You’re me (a super slacker). Luckily, the good ol’ internet has our back, as usual.

Let’s take a look at some of my favorite Golden Globes looks, in no particular order.

………………………………………………………………

Emily Blunt This dress is the stuff of dreams, what with its like-a-glove fit, foamy netting and pretty pretty princess hue.

………………………………………………………………

Sandra Bullock I know the color is a bit melty-purple-crayon, but there’s no denying that the fit is exquisite. This rein-ya-in shape would look great on most body types.

………………………………………………………………

Marion Collitard The architectural asymmetry? I die. In theory, this dress’s focus should be lopsidded boobage, but it instead manages to present itself as just artistic enough.

………………………………………………………………

Cameron Diaz Cameron by now has red carpet pro status, as well as the stylist know-how that goes with it. Thus it’s not surprising that this straight sheath works well with her tall, narrow frame. And for once, the matching-lipstick -to-dress maneuver finds victory.

………………………………………………………………

Anna Paquin I realize this dress looks somewhat like a creation in which Mod Podge had a hand. But this one is best viewed from a few steps back; take the dress as a whole in terms of the coloring and cut. Details do not always rule; in this case, big pictures trumps.

………………………………………………………………

Jennifer Garner Very “I’m a movie star and just threw this on,” no? This one wins in its simplicity and age-appropriateness. She’s covered, but le sex is not lost; body-hugging seaming and a gentle shimmer do the trick.

………………………………………………………………

Lea Michelle What can I say? I’m a sucker for a sweetheart neckline. And goth elements infused in a fairytale shape. And frothy, feathery petticoats… Bravo Oscar.

………………………………………………………………

Maggie Gyllenhaal A little strategically placed origami never hurt anyone. In fact, I assess it did quite the opposite for Ms. Gyllenhaal. Also conquering the mermaid is always not as easy feat, but alas, Roland did it and did it well.

………………………………………………………………

Diane Kruger I assume this choice is likely to be contested, but I’m holding my ground. It’s Christian Lacroix people! This Christian Lacroix. This is a designer to whom fashion is pure art — art undiluted by commercial objectives. Anyone brave enough willing to risk worst dressed lists to convey this message wins my vote.

………………………………………………………………

Taylor Lautner Yeah, I couldn’t resist. That is all.

New Merch’ Monday: Lily Stud Hobo

teal

teal

Let’s color by numbers with this one. I’ll give you bullets.

Take notes.

  • Structure is solid, allowing the bag to stand upright when you set it down.
  • The studs are out-of-control in style right now. I advise incorporating them not into your jackets, but instead on your hand candy.
  • Black will always be a winner, and the teal is a wonderful transition color. It honestly works for every season with the brown handle up there.
  • Accented by a dark gold, the bag has a sophisticated vibe, making it a great handbag for a wide range of ages.

    black

    black

  • While the opening is slightly smaller than desired, the structure allows one to see the whole inside of the bag, thus eliminating any ohmygosh-I-can’t-find-ANYTHING-in-here issues. You know what I’m talking about.
  • The bag, overall is simple, but the embellishments (such as the braided strap, studs, and curvy seam along the bottom) make it special.

If you’re nervous about the stud trend, the Lily is a great way to try it out tastefully, while still staying true to your slightly more subdued side. You stay classy, Planet Earth.

Weekly Blogosphere Roundup

In this “blogging business,” I find I am surrounded by some pretty cool people. People who tell me about some pretty cool stuff.

bricks will be...

bricks will be...

It’s all pretty cool.

This week, I was made aware of some new (to me) blogs. Tula, over at WHORANGE, is here to save you from your morning I-don’t-know-what-to-wears. Thank goodness for those RTW fashion shows. Without them, I might just end up in well-tailored dark denim and a slimming sweater.

What a cop-out. Here’s to taking risks, I guess. You know, because we need more print in unnecessary places.

Oh, and would you like to see the most upsetting part of my day? WHAT IS THIS ABOUT.

It’s okay. No, it’s…it’s fine. Really. I think it would be super if that decade came back.

JUST SUPER.

Next. Thanks to another newly-introduced site, or kool kids bulletin board, if you will, I am now discovering some of the raddest bits and pieces of just about everything. But I’m not obsessed with it. Yet. thisdoesn’thelp

What do we think? Dig the Ready-to-Wear look? Or perhaps some eighties glam? Someone help us.
