7 Wardrobe Staples You Need in Your Closet

Trends in fashion come and go, but there are certain wardrobe staples that never go out of style. Everyone needs a few timeless classics that are versatile, practical, and easy to wear when you’re rushed getting ready or stuck on outfit ideas. Check out our list of wardrobe staples you need in your closet now! We know you’ll reach for these pieces again and again.

PS. Are you a college gal looking for her perfect college-to-real-world fashion staples? Be sure to check out our interactive timeline for building a college wardrobe, too!

1. Nude High Heels

Nude Heels

Nude heels are the perfect pairing to almost any outfit. A practical addition to any woman’s wardrobe, they’re classic enough to wear to the office, yet stylish enough to pair with dark jeans for a date. We love the girly details on the nude heels pictured above, styled by Vanessa of Stylishlyme. Haven’t you heard? Nude is the new black.

2. Day-to-Night Dress

Red Dress

This simple red dress worn by Jessica of What I Wore is the perfect example of a dress that transitions seamlessly from day to night. Choose a dress with simple lines and a solid color as your wardrobe staple to make accessorizing easy. Pair a dress like this one with sandals, a patterned scarf, and a denim jacket for a casual look during the day. Glam things up at night with a statement necklace and a pair of high-heeled sandals.

3. Tote Bag

When it comes to handbags, we can appreciate a closet full of different colors, styles, and textures. But one bag stands above the rest when it comes to versatility, function, and use — the tote bag. We can’t imagine life without this go-to carry-all! The studded detail on this tote carried by Rachel from Pink Peonies adds a fun touch to an otherwise girly, polished look. Shop our lookalike studded tote bag here!

4. Chambray Shirt

A modern update to the classic white button-up, a chambray shirt is considered a basic these days. We love how Blair, the blogger behind Atlantic - Pacific, pairs hers with pops of hot pink and a military-inspired jacket for a put-together, preppy look.

5. Black Aviators

Like handbags, sunglasses are another accessory we love to play with in a variety of colors, shapes, and styles. The one pair we can’t live without, however, is an all-black aviator. A sleek pair of these frames adds a bit of daring edge and sophistication to any outfit. Julia from Gal Meets Glam pairs hers with a quilted skirt and leopard print sneakers for a cool weekend look. Try our sister store at Sunglass Warehouse here for a similar, affordable look!

6. A White Blazer

white blazer Ashley, the blogger behind Life, Love and the Pursuit of Shoes, shows us that a white blazer has the power to transform even a basic t-shirt and jeans into a polished, modern look. Push your black blazer aside and make room for this new wardrobe staple. Look for ones in long, tailored shapes and slim tuxedo styles.

7. A Statement Necklace

Gaining popularity over the past few years, it’s become clear that the statement necklace is here to stay. Find one that goes with a variety of colors and necklines to have as a permanent fixture in your everyday wardrobe. We love the vintage look of the necklace pictured above, worn by the blogger behind Penny Pincher Fashion.

Festival Style: Ladylike

Coachella Style Sunny Dress Polyvorecoachella_style_yellow_dress_35inchinseam_2

This ladylike look is inspired by Thirty-Five Inch Inseam blogger, Rebecca. We love a sunny yellow dress with pops of blue and red in the paisley scarf and wedges. The look is completed with a tan floppy hat, this western-inspired Olive Stitched Satchel, and a denim jacket, so you can stay warm during the late-night headliner set.

Festival Style: Boho

Coachella Style Aztec Aspect Polyvore

tyedye986

How cute is Shea of Peace Love Shea? If this look doesn’t scream Coachella, we don’t know what does. The Kristin Braided Buckle Satchel pairs perfectly with an Aztec-printed crop top, denim cut-offs, cowboy boots, and some Southwest-inspired accessories. Aren’t into the Aztec print? Go hippie with tie-dye like Shea!

Festival Style: Trendy

Late Afternoon Polyvore

Late Afternoon

Crop tops and maxis are a staple of music festival fashion, but this look inspired by the blogger behind Late Afternoon is a step above the rest with simplistic black-and-white color blocking and metallic accessories. Maxis are a versatile festival option. They provide plenty of coverage while still keeping you cool when temperatures rise. Add a pop of color with some fun sunglasses and a classic black bag like this Oxford Buckle Satchel.

Festival Style: Casual-Cool

Could I Have That Polyvore

Could I Have That

Bored with denim cutoffs? The blogger behind Could I Have That? switches things up with printed shorts much like the ones we feature above. We love the adorable black ruffle combined with a trendy black lace bralette and ivory crochet top. Channel this blogger, and instead of cowboy boots, opt for a pair of cream-colored slouchy booties and an oversized metallic bag like this Lana Buckle Tote.

Festival Style: Edgy

Aimee Polyvore

Aimee Actual

We can always count on Aimee from Song of Style to give us something unique. We love how she dressed down a white, lace bodycon dress. She keeps it casual with a denim jacket, bold snakeskin cowboy boots and a unique snakeskin bag like this Estelle Exotic Messenger. Add some metallic gold bangles, a pair of classic wayfarers, and you are ready to enjoy the sights and sounds of your favorite music festival!

Haute Holidays: Rachel of Life Unsweetened

Frosted windows, twinkling lights, piles of presents — ready or not, all signs signal that the holly-jolly holidays are here! To get in the seasonal spirit, we asked five of the hottest style bloggers around to dish on all things holiday — from their favorite childhood memories to those holiday tunes they just can’t stand. So cozy up with your laptop and a cup of hot cocoa, and enjoy an extra-chic dose of holiday cheer.

Our latest Haute Holiday interview is with the straightforward and fashion-forward Rachel of Life Unsweetened.

Rachel of Life Unsweetened

Which “Kate” will you be channeling when you attend holiday parties this season — Moss, Middleton, Bosworth, or Perry?

Rachel: Kate Bosworth.

What holiday song brings you the most holiday spirit? Which song KILLS it?

Rachel: I love All I Want for Christmas is You — it’s such a happy song! I’m not a huge fan of songs like Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer, though.

What holiday food makes you bring out the stretchy pants?

Rachel: Green bean casserole. Yum!

What’s on your wishlist this holiday?

Rachel: I’m thinking of buying a Kindle — I’m so behind on reading, and I think this will force me to start reading more books during my commute (on the train).

We’re all ears: Have a great holiday entertainment tip?

Rachel: When it comes to food, have a variety. As someone who is allergic to peanuts and can’t eat cheese, I find that there are slim pickings at many gatherings. Keep in mind some people want to eat healthy, some are lactose-intolerant, and some may be vegetarian!

The Bennett handbag

Which Handbag Heaven bag are you dreaming of this holiday season?

Rachel: The Bennett.

See how Rachel styled the Bennett throughout this entire post!

What holiday beverage makes you the merriest?

Rachel: Hot chocolate is my favorite for cold weather. It reminds me of my childhood.

Which gift from years past rivals the excitement of the Red Rider BB Gun from A Christmas Story?

Rachel: When I was around 10, I received a makeup vanity filled with nail polishes. I still have it to this day (at my parent’s house).

Rachel with the Bennett handbag

What holiday movie is on repeat throughout the season?

Rachel: A Christmas Story. It seriously never gets old.

What’s your favorite holiday memory?

Rachel: I miss spending the holidays with my grandparents. They’ve since passed away, so I cherish the memories of all the cousins gathering at their house and eating my grandma’s delicious food.
