Cameron Diaz Does it Right!

If you’re a Cameron Diaz fan, let me hear you! If you’re a Shrek fan, let me hear you! If you’re tired of reading my phrase, let me hear you, then let me hear you!

Okay so I’m not as quirky and fun as Cameron, but I can attempt to re-enact her sense of style. My first stop, her purses!

We have the cutest little handbag that represents Cameron’s larger, yet still very cute tote. It’s our Elgin Studded Handbag!

This little gem gives you the same sparkle as Cameron’s…just in a smaller dose! This handbag is perfect for any hipster who lives on the edge. This great small handbag has a heavily studded front flap that breathes a little life into this bag. Complete with two detachable straps, the Elgin Studded Handbag can be worn as a shoulder bag or a messenger bag.

The interior of this beauty is tan and is complete with a zippered pocket and two attached pockets to store small items.

Do not doubt me when I say that this bag is CLUTCH when it comes to a night on the town! Add a little sparkle to your attire with our Elgin Studded Handbag!

Social Media Fan of the Week

Each week, we like to introduce one of our social media fans, whether that person be a Twitter follower or a fan of us on Facebook. Be sure to check back weekly for a Q&A section with our chosen fan of the week. And who knows, maybe we’ll choose you next!

Meet Sarah!

Sarah found us through the YouTube makeup guru, MissChievous. Sarah is a huge fan and a subscriber of hers, so when MissChievous held a contest to win a bag from Handbag Heaven, she entered right away! She immediately checked out our site and loved it. Sarah hasn’t bought any of our bags yet, but intends to. She describes all the bags as reasonably priced, totally on cue with what’s fashionable and very unique!

1.) What is your personal philosophy on fashion?

Being a jewelry designer and lover of all things fashionable, I’d say my fashion philosophy is a simple one. Always be yourself! Don’t be afraid to love something that isn’t on trend because fashion trends come and go but the things you love to wear the most will stay with you for years! That being said, a fabulous handbag that you love will go with everything no matter what you wear and will make you feel confident, special and happy! It is a great way to add that extra something to your ensemble, and if you want to incorporate something trendy into your wardrobe without overdoing it, a handbag is definitely the way to go.

My personal fashion style is laid back and comfortable. I love a good sexy pair of jeans, a soft t-shirt and sparkly flats and I would never forget some fabulous jewelry. I’m very much into jewelry and I currently have my own line called Mitzvah Jewelry. My favourite fashion icons are Jennifer Lopez, Stella McCartney and Michael Kors.

2.) How often do you switch handbags?

I tend to switch bags twice a year, once in the fall/winter and once in the spring/summer. Generally I have two bags that I use for each, a larger and a smaller for both. My favourite style is always the hobo and I also have a few small clutches that I use for special occasions.

3.) Do you prefer large handbags to store everything in or are you a clutch/small purse person?

To me, a handbag is something I never leave home without! It’s like a good friend, so reliable, always holding everything I need. I am married with an 11 year old son, so it’s important to me that my bag is not only really fashionable but also functional. I don’t like tiny bags because they don’t hold enough. I like a mid-sized bag that I can throw a water bottle in, some sunscreen if I’m walking and if my son is with me, some band-aids and such for those just-in-case moments.

4.) What was your most memorable handbag you ever wore?

My most memorable handbag is definitely the one I use now! I bought it three years ago at a small boutique in Montreal. It is a bright pink hobo from Oilily, that has a small floral print on it. I bought it because it was just the right size, the perfect color and completely unique from anything else I’d seen. To this day I still get compliments on it all the time which makes me feel fabulous!

5 Tips for Breaking into the Fashion Industry

How to Jump Start a Career in Fashion

Portrait of Alexandra Suhner Isenberg by Leigh Keily

Portrait by Leigh Keily

Alexandra Suhner Isenberg of Searching for Style is back, this time to give Handbag Heaven readers some insight into finding a job in the fashion industry. She knows her stuff: in addition to studying fashion in Paris and London, Alexandra has worked as a designer for Sonia Rykiel and Burberry. She has lectured at Saint Matins College of Art and Design and the London College of Fashion, and currently, she teaches fashion students at both the Arts Institute of Vancouver and the Vancouver College of Art and Design. Be sure to check out her blog for some additional bonus tips for students looking to make a living working in fashion.

The fashion industry is extremely competitive, but it can be a very rewarding career path once you get your foot through the door. If you are passionate about fashion and want to prepare yourself for a job in the industry, here are a few things you should be doing.

1. Get an education: There are thousands of people trying to get fashion jobs, so a post-secondary education will definitely make things easier for you. There are tons of great fashion-related degree and diploma courses available, but those aren’t the only ways to get into the industry. If you want to do a traditional university course, it doesn’t mean you can’t work in fashion afterwards. American department stores often hire psychology graduates for their buying teams; in fact, I know a very successful Canadian magazine editor who studied psychology in university and never did a fashion course! Another friend of mine studied theology at a famous English university before she went on to be a marketing manager at Harrods and then a publicity director at a Conde Nast magazine.

2. Learn a language: I would have never been able to study and work in Paris, the fashion capital of the world, if I hadn’t been able to speak French. The fashion industry is global, and contrary to popular belief, not everyone speaks English. So if you have high school French, keep it up by practicing it. Italian and Spanish are also very useful. If you are thinking of learning a language, and you are ready for a challenge, try learning Mandarin. China is the manufacturing hub of the world and one of the most important new fashion markets. Having Mandarin on your resume will be a huge asset. (Did you know it is the most widely spoken language in the world? Spanish is in second place. English is third!) I am starting some Mandarin classes soon…it is going to be tough!

3. Get retail experience: Retail is sometimes a dirty word in fashion, but at the end of the day, the fashion industry is about selling clothes, and that happens on the shop floor. When you are studying, try and work a fashion retail job. I know it doesn’t pay as much as waitressing does, but I can guarantee you that out of two candidates going for the same fashion job, the one with retail experience will definitely be chosen over the one without. I know of a very big activewear brand that makes all their staff do half a day a week on the shop floor. That includes designers, buyers, and even the CEO! They value the retail shop floor experience enormously, and so should you. Get a part time job in one of your favorite stores, and you’ll also be eligible for discounts! Another thing to consider is graduate training programs; there are many companies that offer excellent programs for college graduates. I had a friend who started off selling men’s shirts in a big luxury retailer, and through their graduate training program, ended up on their marketing team! Find out what companies offer graduate training programs, get a job in their store, and work your way up from there!

4. Be aware of the options. Many students I meet want to design evening dresses or be a buyer. Are you great at math? Because you need to be if you want to be a buyer! I always ask my students, “How many evening dresses do you own?” Usually the answer is “not many”…but we all have tons of pairs of jeans, t-shirts, and day dresses. Why not design those? Consider your job options — there are so many roles in the fashion industry, you should be open-minded and choose something that will suit your skill set. Think about the brands you love, and have a look at their job listings. What sort of roles are available in that company? Do your research and keep your career options open.

5. Know your stuff: I get really frustrated sometimes when I meet fashion students who don’t know about the major fashion brands and have no idea what’s going on in the industry. I get most of my fashion updates from blogs, which are available to anyone with an internet connection, so these days, there is no excuse not to be in the know about the fashion world. Start reading magazines, websites, and blogs, and make sure you know who’s who in fashion. Here are some of my blog recommendations — I get them into my inbox every day:

Business of Fashion is my bible and should be yours. It is the BEST fashion industry blog.

On the Runway is written by Cathy Horyn, one of the industry’s most respected fashion critics. Make sure you know what she is thinking.

Style Bubble, by Susie Bubble, is a great way to keep up with new designers and interesting brands.

The Cut is New York Magazine’s fashion blog, which features little bits of gossip, fashion news, and celebrity stories. It’s a great way to keep up with fashion stories as they happen.

And my blog, Searching for Style, has coverage of all the major runway shows during the fashion weeks. I do a shortened version for my readers, as well as a lot of commentary on the latest fashion news.

Good luck! Do you have your own tips for making it in fashion? Know of some great fashion blogs we should be reading? Share the love!

The Trend of Tuesday Reveals…

Tara Accordion Pleat Satchel

It’s not just a grandma thing. Nor is it just a mom thing…It can now be your thing!

I’ll tell you what, this style has got me going crazy over it! Creamy White/Tan is in…Accordion style!

Okay, I’m sure this seems like a random style crave, but ladies, you have got to check out our Tara Accordion Pleat Satchel! This purse screams class! It’s the older, wiser cousin of our Alexis Zipper Hobo. Both share the same accordion pleats, but the Tara has a classic shape and neutral color, while the Alexis is a little more funky and bright.

This seemingly retro-style handbag really is perfection at its finest! It’s simple, elegant and extremely handy! It’s been taken with a twist of modernization and a hardy helping of class!

The outside of the Tara is covered in a tan colored leatherette that includes an oversized, knotted shoulder strap for easy carrying. The top magnetic snap closure opens to reveal the signature Ebisu printed fabric lining. One zippered pocket and two open top pockets are located inside so you can keep track of all your favorite things.

Ladies, old school or not, this beauty needs you as much as you need it! You cannot get any more tasteful than this! Please do have respect for the perfectly classy and grab our Tara Accordion Pleat Satchel now!

New Merch Monday: Delphi Studded Handbag

Every girl loves to be seen with a stud on her arm. She feels confident, beautiful and noticed. Well imagine how great she’d feel with studs on her arm. Yes, studs, plural. That’s right, there’s nothing like the feeling of hitting the town with the Delphi Studded Handbag in tow. Trust me.

Delphi Studded Handbag from Handbag Heaven

Featured in REDBOOK Magazine as a Minty Fresh trend flash, this shimmery handbag is a celebrity of sorts. Its turquoise leatherette is complimented by silver studs that are sure to attract attention.

In addition to looking great, the Delphi Studded Handbag can carry more than any old stud could. A zippered pocket on the back is a great storage option, but remember it’s what’s on the inside that counts. The inside of this handbag is lined with an Ebisu paisley print and contains not only a zippered pocket but two open top pockets to store all of the essentials and then some.

This sweet treat is sure to last longer than your flavor of the week.

The Weekly Roundup

All right, you caught me. I jumped on the bandwagon and finally went to see Twilight: Eclipse. While I was watching Bella struggle with her choice between vampires and werewolves, I couldn’t help but think of life’s many other difficult choices, which led me to my inspiration for this edition of the Weekly Roundup…

Jacob vs. Edward If you are in fact a teenage girl who is in love with a vampire and has a werewolf for a best friend, then my sympathies go out to you. Let’s face it, choosing between Jacob and Edward is a no easy choice.

Paper vs. Plastic The age old question. I’m sure you’re forced to make this choice on a weekly basis, so I’ll spare you the agony of going through it again. Instead I offer you a blog by the same name full of fashion and photography. Don’t worry, the only choice you’ll have to make is which post to read first.

Jake vs. Vienna Where would we be without our monthly dose of Bachelor-related drama. Personally, I can’t get enough of Chris Harrison’s quips, naive singles searching for love in helicopters and each week’s promise of the most dramatic rose ceremony ever, which is probably why I’ve been following the Jake and Vienna saga more closely than I should.

This vs. That Now you can get this, or you can get with that… If you love the thrill of making a 50/50 decision, there’s a good chance you could spend hours on This vs. That.

Which blog will you check out first? The choice is yours!

Staff Review: Hampton Oversized Clutch

If I look like I just stepped off a yacht every day, I’m doing my job right. My preferred style has always been nautical, and the stripes, dark denim, and understated chic themes of today’s trends have made it pretty easy.

While black has been the go-to shade for most of my closet, I have made a conscious effort to include more navy lately, and I am happy to report that effort’s positive effects on my dressing, as a whole. I just get excited when I can walk out the door without wearing almost all to all black.

It’s the little things.

And while we’re on the subject, I have a little something I think I should mention. Now, the term “little” is relative, you see, as the Hampton Oversized Clutch is certainly not small, hence the name. The clutch is huge. But, compared to my normal bags… iz leetle.

my little elephant

Which, I suppose, makes sense, seeing as it’s a clutch and not a “normal bag.” But if my normal bag is to an elephant as anyone else’s normal bag is to, you know, a very medium-sized mammal, then the Hampton Oversized Clutch would be my elephant clutch.

I’m not good with animal names. The parents skipped that part of my development and started me immediately on soccer positions. (“Terryl, whaaat is Mr. Keeper known aaas…?” ”Impenetrable wall!”) Moving on.

Available in navy or white, this clutch will bring your nautical dreams to reality, even if that means just looking like a sailor. Or a sailor’s well-intentioned-but-really-just-tans-while-boating girlfriend. Just remind him who will carry his gum wrappers once your hit the shore again. You know what I’m talking about.

So, if you’re in the market for an elephant or a huge clutch, take a gander at the Hudson. The woven little envelope is perfect for sticking right under your arm and conquering the open seas. Or the grocery. Either way.
