Is Your Purse Organized?

Purse Organizers

There are many options!

Are you an organized person? How about your purse? Is that organized? In my world, I am an organized person that loves pockets and has a place for everything…but my purse, another story. Tell me if you’re like me…You decide to switch purses, you know, change things up a bit. You toss all the old receipts, smushed gum, and clean out your make-up/feminine toiletry kit you carry. You re-organize your wallet, balance your checkbook and begin the purse transformation. Then, you make the switch. Everything is in its place. Your wallet is organized, your pockets are filled correctly and you feel good!

…Then…A week later, when you’re running late, or your phone is ringing, or you need a tampon, you’re stuck digging through a now disaster of a purse, in a hurry, panicking, trying to find whatever it is that you desperately need, i.e. keys, phone, tampon…You get the point.

“So why not keep it organized all the time?!” you think to yourself. Then you secretly vow to yourself that you will forever keep your belongings organized and neat. (Until the next time you’re running late and you can’t find your keys…)

Well ladies, I am here to give you the 411 on purse organization. Have you ever heard of a little thing called a purse organizer? You know, those wacky infomercials that make organization look like a breeze? Do they really work?

Well ladies, reviews rave that they do! (Granted, you are the one responsible for keeping your items stored in the organizer properly…it can’t do it for you!) These organizational saviors are clutch for your purse! They will securely store a planner, keys, cell phone, a notepad, toiletry items, hand sanitizer and more! Organization = No more messy purses! I seriously suggest investing in one of these handy helpers!

Ladies, if you have the will power and are tired of digging through your clutter catch-all satchel, then do look into one of these purse organizers. Why not make life a little easier?!

Happy organizing!

Bagology 101

People always say that your clothing is a reflection of your personality but have you ever wondered what your handbag is saying? If so, you’re not the first. In 1945, Anita Daniel published an article in the New York Times addressing the science (yes, science) of bagology. According to the article, a woman’s handbag is of extreme importance. It’s the key to her real self; the prosaic answer to many poetic conceptions. Deep stuff, right?

So get out a notebook and a number two pencil. It’s time for a little Bagology 101:

Backpack - The backpack-carrier says to the world that she is a practical and genuine person. She is always prepared and not concerned with what others think of her.

Clutch - A woman with a clutch is confident in who she is. She doesn’t feel the need to carry her entire life with her and isn’t afraid to ask a companion to hold any belongings that won’t fit in her clutch.

Under the Arm- The woman who carries her handbag under her arm is seen as the definition of sophistication and class.

Oversized / Tote - Carrying an oversized or tote bag says that you’re a busy bee but also practical and prepared. Those with an oversized/tote are seen as fun-loving and personable.

Fabrics and Frills - It’s not just the style of bag you carry but also its distinguishing features that speak about your personality. Knit bags give off a warm and artsy vibe, whereas metal accessories signal someone with a rebellious streak. Sequins and sparkles are generally worn by those who like to be the center of attention whereas neutral colored bags say that you’re friendly and approachable.

Now that you’ve taken the course, it’s time for a pop quiz… Do you agree with these bagology diagnoses? What do you think your handbag says about you?

How Much Does Your Purse Weigh?

Do you carry the weight of the world on your shoulders? Most of us women do. Now I’m not just talking stress, work, family, cleaning the house, etc. I’m talking about your purse!

On average, a woman’s purse weighs roughly 7-10 pounds! Which is INSANE!

Ever wondered why your back and shoulders hurt? This could be the reason! Most women carry their lives in their purse…From keys to cell phones, kid’s toys to dog treats, we’ve got it all!

So to help with this, literally, back breaking dilemma, I wanted to know where we should start with our purse slimming problem…Start here: Take a guess…

Which item in your purse holds the most weight?

The Answer: Your wallet!

We don’t need shoe box sized wallets ladies! Keep it simple and downsize! Trash extra credit cards, store gift cards, receipts and please…dump your change at night. Eight dollars in change does add up in weight!

Another purse slimming trick is what I call the, “Drop all but one.” As in, keep one lip stick, one chap stick, one hand sanitizer, one tide pen, one pack of gum, etc. By keeping double, triple or even quadruple of everything in your purse you’re adding unwanted pounds!

Do you have frequent back pain?

Here’s a random fact ladies: Our breasts weight an average of 5 pounds! Then add on another 7 pounds for your purse, and daily you’re hauling around an extra 12 pounds! No wonder the back pain!

Try to keep your handbag weight to a minimum. Sticking to 3-5 pounds will greatly reduce back and shoulder overload! Yes, it is annoying to clean out your purse on a weekly basis, but keeping it trimmed, will not only reduce the stress of being disorganized, but it will also dramatically reduce any weight thrown onto your shoulders.

So ladies…Do yourselves a favor…Keep it simple and lighten the load!

Shape of My… Handbag

People express themselves in different ways. Some through their clothing, some through their art and some through their handbags. Experimenting with handbag color and print is a great way to express your individuality. Even experimenting with handbag shape can help you make a statement. But at what point do shaped handbags go from quirky to crazy?

This guitar inspired handbag is sure to strike a chord with fans of The King.

Perfect for tailgating, this football handbag would be a touchdown on game-day.

These watermelon inspired bags would certainly satisfy a sweet tooth. But then again, so would a smoothie…

This Chinese food carton bag puts a whole new spin on the term carry out.

Technology truly is everywhere. There is no better reminder of our electronic love affair than this keyboard handbag.

Move over Paris Hilton. Who needs a dog in a purse when you can have a dog-shaped purse? It won’t bark and better yet, you don’t have to clean up after it.

What do you think of these shaped handbags? Would you use one for a special occasions, daily use or absolutely never?

A Bag Full of Memories

In my life there are handbags I remember… That is what Lennon & McCartney wrote, right? Okay, maybe not. But it’s true that you never forget a bag and the memories it was a part of. And while there are some bags I wish I could forget from a style perspective, they were all part of some great moments. For this reason, I’d like to take a moment to honor the memory of the bags from my past.

1991: The Easter Purse. Quite possibly the first purse I owned, this white, plastic bag was a gift from the Easter Bunny. Along with a matching white hat and a frilly pink dress, I was a three-year-old straight out of a Sears catalogue.

1994: The Barbie Carrier. While not exactly a bag, this hot pink carrier was perfect for a six-year-old. What else did I have to carry around except my Barbie collection? Complete with compartments for my dolls and all of their accessories, this carrier didn’t leave my side for at least a year.

1998: The Inflatable Backpack. I still remember it vividly. Silver, plastic and inflatable. I purchased this bag on my first unsupervised trip to the mall. I can only imagine how thrilled my parents must have been with my stylish purchase.

2005: The Blue Hobo. This purse rode shotgun when I got my driver’s license, accompanied me to my first job and saw my first heartbreak. It had a blue Hawaiian print lining and far too many pockets on the outside. I used it until it was more gray than blue and had a hard time letting go of it even after the zipper broke.

2008: The Purple Oversized. This bag had a large purple bow and was my first experience with a truly over-sized handbag. It was one of my first collegiate purchases and became known as the Purple People-Eater. When I started using it, my belongings would get lost due to its sheer size. But as time wore on and the bag wore down, a hole in the lining literally began eating my keys and lip gloss.

2010: The Beige Messenger. An essential purchase for my semester in Europe, this bag weathered it all. It was large enough to hold everything a traveler could possibly need. It saw rain and snow, airplanes and subways, the Eiffel Tower and the Colosseum. By the end of four months the fabric was denim-stained and the adjustable strap wouldn’t stay clasped but I’ll always remember it as the bag that joined me on the adventure of a lifetime.

Though these bags may not have been the most glamorous or the most well-kept, they were certainly the most loved. Are there certain bags from your life that you will always remember?

Staff Review: Madison Messenger Tote

I don’t like pink. I really don’t. For me to find something in the girliest of hues that doesn’t make me want to turn and run, it takes a verrry careful combination of elements.

perfection, a la pink

However, I have found the perfect pink handbag, and I want to shout from atop a mountain.

The Madison Messenger Tote is the ideal bag, because it’s sturdy without being rigid, and it’s simple without being boring. The combinations of either the ballerina pink and the soft white or the tough black and the fearless green make for an obsession-worthy bag.

Consistently, the Madison has been every Handbag Heaven staffer’s favorite pink bag. Not only that, I am actually currently trying to talk myself out of purchasing it. I don’t need it right now. I really don’t. …I really …don’t.

Sorry. Sometimes, it takes a village.

rohk stah

Hefty in size, this simple messenger/tote bag is ideal for stuffing with a day’s worth of necessities while you trek through town all summer. I love that there is just one outside pocket so I don’t feel the need to pack every pocket full of makeup, nail polish, extra jewelry, PlayDoh…you know, things I don’t really need.

While the exterior stays simple, the floral interior is enough to make even the most hardened handbag lover smile. It’s alright, Beckham. I won’t tell anyone I saw your teeth.

The Madison Messenger Tote will quickly become the favorite tote or messenger in your rotation, so whether you’re looking to rock the black and green or wish to carry the pale pink in reverent memory of the days when you thought you were graceful enough to be a ballerina, this big ol’ bag’s for you.

Any Suggestions?

Lost and Confused Sign Post

Ladies…Please enlighten me on this…I am seriously struggling with (when I go to work) whether or not I should:

  1. Bring just my work bag and just toss my wallet inside..
  2. Bring both my purse and my work bag..
  3. Bring just my purse and make-do fitting what I need into my purse..

Call me weird, but I have struggled with this concept for years! I want to have a bag that holds my planner, work binders, computer, lunch, etc. Then at the same time, I want to have my wallet with me, and chapstick and whatever other purse like necessities I may need on-hand. Then again, I don’t want to be the office bag lady and hull in two fairly large bags to work every day.

Am I the only one faced with this intrinsic dilemma? Because I literally search and sift through my bags and purses until I think I am satisfied with all items in one… Then I change my mind and bring a purse and work bag.

Cue frustration.

I do see the purpose in bringing your purse if you are going out to lunch or heading somewhere straight from work…but I don’t see the point in having two GIANT bags at my feet all day when my only plan is to head home and feed my dogs!

So ladies, please do let me know what is best. Carry both? Find an organized way to maintain one work bag with all necessary items? Carry my binder and laptop in hand and stuff lunch in my purse?

What do you suggest? What do you carry? I want to know!

It’s a Jean. It’s a Legging. It’s a Jegging?

Eenie meenie… Whether you’re deciding between chocolate and vanilla or you’re the subject of a Kingston/Bieber collaboration, making choices can be quite the challenge. Luckily there is a fashion trend sweeping the globe designed with the indecisive in mind. Meet the jegging. Never again do you need to choose between those great-fitting jeans and your favorite pair of leggings. Now they can be one in the same.

I was first introduced to the jean-legging hybrid this past winter in Italy and I’ll admit that at first I was skeptic. I didn’t think I could trust an article of clothing in the middle of its own identity crisis. Are you jeans or leggings? You have to choose! But over time I came to find that they’re actually quite functional and fashionable.

Thanks to the jegging, you no longer have to waste time trying to get your jeans to tuck perfectly into your boots. And in the summer, jeggings are great lightweight alternative to real denim. They can be found in a number of washes and styles, often with faux pockets and buttons to resemble their predecessor, the skinny jean.

Looking into my little crystal ball, I see jeggings in my future. But at the end of the day the choice is up to you (and sorry, you can’t eenie meenie this one). Jeggings, fashion staple or fad?

How To Organize Your Handbag

Julie Andrews in Mary PoppinsMary Poppins has been an idol of mine since I was a little girl. Think about it: the woman could sing and fly. Not to mention, she was practically perfect in every way. I always dreamed that one day I would grow up to be just like her.

Flash forward 15 years: I still can’t fly, or even really sing (I blame my dad’s side of the family for that genetic flaw) but I can pull obscure item after item out of my purse. However, I can’t really count this as a victory. While Mary Poppins pulled lamps out of her bag to amuse the Banks children, I find myself pulling my hair out because I can’t find what I’m looking for.

Luckily for me, there is a cure for MPBS (Mary Poppins bag syndrome). All you need is a spoonful or sugar. Oh, and these 10 steps…

  1. Clean slate. Start by dumping the contents of your bag out onto a flat surface.
  2. Garbage day. Sift through all of your belongings and throw away the wrappers, receipts, and other trash you no longer need.
  3. Take it to the bank. Collect all of the loose change you find either in a jar or a coinpurse.
  4. Drop the dead weight. Go through your wallet and remove any coupons, receipts, old cards and excess change you don’t need to carry around with you.
  5. You can organize your bag in ten easy stepsReceipt with you or in the bag? Use an envelope or ziplock bag to store receipts that you do need to keep.
  6. Bare necessities. Separate the remaining items into two piles: one for things you use on a daily basis, and one for things you only use on occasion.
  7. Just in case. Make sure that fragile items, such as cameras and sunglasses, are stored in a case to prevent any damage.
  8. Downsize the makeup. Rather than bringing an entire makeup counter with you, limit your cosmetics to items you actually need. Also, consider downsizing to travel containers to save space.
  9. It’s in the bag. Group your items and find them a home. Side pockets are perfect for items you need quick access to, like cell phones and keys. And brightly covered bags, such as the 5-Piece Cosmetic Bag Set, are a great option for cosmetics because they’re easy to spot.
  10. Scheduled maintenance. Take five minutes each week to weed out any unnecessary items that worked their way into your bag and you’ll never face MPBS again!

Now that you’re free from the clutter, what’s the strangest thing you found while cleaning out your bag?

What’s Your Wallet?

It’s no longer about what’s in your wallet. Now the craze is what kind of wallet. Are you the basic women’s wallet? Do you use flat push clasp wallets? Do you need a checkbook wallet? A wristlet?

Whatever wallet darning type of woman you are, be sure your wallet fits your needs. I am a person of pockets. I love staying organized and knowing where everything is and goes. If you’re the type of person whose wallet generally takes all the heat, as in gets beat up, dropped, spilled on, etc. then the flat push clasp is probably for you. Whatever your need, there’s a wallet for you. Here’s which and why:

  • Basic Women’s Wallet – This, non-particular termed gem is your stereotypical women’s wallet. It has a space for your license, credit cards, change, cash and other odds and ends. It’s generally bulkier but holds all you find necessary in a wallet. These wallets are usually well organized and are most appropriate for those who desire function over fashion.

  • Flat Push Clasp Wallet – This durable wallet is completely encased, flat on both sides and has one push clasp at the top which opens and locks the wallet. This particular wallet doesn’t hold more than cash, some change and your credit cards. It can be very organized, but does not hold the bulk of your basic women’s wallet. This wallet is extremely durable and is recommended for the “I beat my wallet!” type women.
  • Checkbook Wallet – This wallet is pretty self explanatory. It holds your checkbook, and everything else. This is generally the bulkiest of women’s wallets, but it keeps your cash, change credit cards, license AND checkbook all in the same place. This is for the women who likes keeping all of her birds in one basket.
  • Wristlet – This purse/wallet it extremely tiny. It usually holds no more than your license, a few credit cards and cash. This wallet is also adorned with a small strap or loop that slips around your wrist, in turn holding the purse in place. (Hence the name wristlet..) This wallet/purse is generally used for evening outs or other busy events that make carrying your everyday tote a hassle.

Basic Women's Wallet

Flat Push Clasp Wallet

Checkbook Wallet

A Wristlet

Well there you have it…the basic wallet-lingo break down. Do remember that every wallet is made of different material and can therefore be more or less durable and/or fashionable. A wallet should be a complement to your purse and your style. Choose wisely ladies.
