Weekly Blogosphere Round-up

So how was your interweb week, friends? Mine was quite delightful, thanks! I found laughter, disappointment, mathematics and spiderboobs…what more could I ask for?

The Parent Trap, Lifesize and Mean Girls may secretly be three of my favorite films, but I still can’t deny that this is one of the most appropriate and hilariously true metaphors that I’ve heard yet. Lohan commenting on another item upon which she ‘”artistically advised”: “I call it Michelle Pfeifer in ‘Scarface.’” Hmm…

Say it ain’t so! How could you do this to me, Mr. Big?! And you met her at a bar? Wait, at YOUR bar? So you’re saying all I had to do was get hired as say, a hostess, and we would now be engaged to be married??

Ah oh well…I always liked Aiden best anyway. Moving on…

Geometry was always my strong point. Looks like the same was true for Victor & Rolf.

And to wrap it up, a little name game! What would you call this?

First, my turn. Cotton Candy at a Soccer Game. Now you.

I Wish Anna Wintour was my Mom

Much to my boyfriend’s (initial) dismay, my last Friday date-night was spent at a local indie movie theater, before the menacing mugs of Anna Wintour and her fellow Voguettes.

The September Issue, the film industry’s most-recent foray into the world of fashion, takes a behind-the-scenes look at the production of Vogue’s 2007 September issue.

From the film’s official website:

“An intimate, funny and surprising look at Anna Wintour and her team of larger-than-life editors as they create this must-have Bible of fashion, Cutler explores the untouchable glamour of Wintour’s Vogue to reveal the extraordinarily passionate people at its heart. He takes us behind the scenes at Fashion Week, to Europe, on shoots and reshoots, and into closed-door staff meetings, bearing witness to an arduous, entertaining, and sometimes emotionally demanding process.”

It’s no big surprise that I la-la-loved the movie. (Case in point: this has long been my favorite t-shirt.)

R.J. Culter, the director, created a tone of substance and magnitude rarely reserved for any fashion-related media outlet (think Zoolander and Bruno). You felt as if you were permitted into a secret society, in which influence and power comes in the form of fabric.

And here’s the kicker…

My boyfriend—a hoodie-wearing, sports watching, sneakers-only-policy, guy’s-guy—liked it too! Yes, he used the word “liked.” Not “tolerated” or “stomached,” but liked. He explained that he was impressed and surprised by the amount of manpower and money that goes into each issue. Amen!

If you have any interest in creative processes (notice I didn’t say fashion!) I really recommend this film. Although a love of handbags wouldn’t hurt.

Weekly Blogosphere Roundup

Everyone loves free stuff, yeah? We are NO different. Trust me. You can actually enter to win a Handbag Heaven giveaway on our girl Lisa’s Fantabulous blog! Go go go!

Style-wise, this week, we had some good…and some really, really awesome.

First, let’s do the good. Lily Allen. Coco Chanel. Handbags. We’re all about it. Lily looks over-the-top rockin’ in these ad photos for Chanel’s fall/winter 2009 debut of Cocoon, that’s all about the puff. I don’t know whether I’d spend the money for something that will SO quickly be out-dated, but the campaign really is stunning.

Next, for the really, really awesome. We remember the book, Where The Wild Things Are, right? I’m pretty sure my mother read that to me AT LEAST six times a week before bedtime growing up. And yeah, maybe I do call her on occasion and ask her to read it over the telephone while I fall asleep. Let’s not judge.

Anyway.

So maybe you wanted to be the child in the book, Max. That means you’re normal. And maybe, if you’re like me, you wanted to be a wild thing…

Well, YOU’RE WELCOME. Your time has come, my fellow crazies. Your time. Has come.

Don’t you just want a onesie, button-down fuzzy pajama with a GIANT TAIL? I know I do.

Okay, back to the real world. So have you ever wanted to shop discount designer fashions from literally anywhere you can reach the internets? There’s an iPhone app for that. If you’re not a member of Gilt Groupe, you need to be. Get on that, girls.

And, as per precedent, here is something bound to distract you from doing anything productive for, at least, 20 minutes: clickforawesome.

Then again, I suppose that depends on your definition of “productive.” Hmm…

6 Ways to Pick Your Perfect Handbag

  1. Glance into your closet. Do you see a cornucopia of colors or do you sway toward a more neutral palate? Pick a purse within the color scheme of your current wardrobe. For example, if all you see is tan, go for a brown, cream or beige option, as a patent, neon-green number isn’t likely to get much play.
  2. Think of where you are usually located at 2pm on a Tuesday. What is your profession? If your job requires that you tote around paperwork, files, books or a pacifier, you need a bag that can accommodate. Think large, deep and square or rectangular.
  3. Look down at your shoes. Did you choose to wear them in pursuit of fashion or function? If you regularly wear toe-pinching heels solely because love their look, form will likely rule over function in this battle. Click through runway images for inspiration and shop from stores’ trendier options. If you donned comfy tennis shoes at your wedding, on the other hand, bare-boned practicality is for you. Focus on the bag’s size and build, and less on overall appearance.
  4. Go through your morning routine in your head. How involved is your “getting ready” process? Does it involve a lot of products, makeup and jewelry? If yes, then you’ll need a bigger purse with several compartments to stash and organize all these maintenance-related doodads. If you a Cherry-Chapstick-only kind of lady, a simple zipped pocket in the lining should suffice.
  5. Think of the last time you lost something. If you can’t remember, then you can probably handle a clutch. If it was within the last week or two, you need a shoulder strap, my friend.
  6. What did you do last Saturday night? If you were out on the town, you’ll need a smaller evening purse on hand. If nightlife adventures aren’t your style, your bigger daytime bag is likely all you need.

Weekly Blogosphere Roundup

I know they say fashion is cyclical, but some things should just be left to the Flintstones in the Paleolithic era, no? American designer Jeremy Scott does not agree. I don’t know about you guys, but I could not believe anyone would dedicate that amount of time to putting all of those cartoon looks into a “collection” and try to be taken seriously. Please, everyone, let’s keep those looks to Halloween. Yikes.

Speaking of, uh…interesting ideas, here’s another one to lift those eyebrows: We love our men just the way they are, but do you ever wished your guy was a bit taller? Zac Posen just might have a solution.

Feeling sassy? Love a little animal print? Alana at Sassy Fashionista says yes and yes. She featured one of our rockin’ Handbag Heaven bags on her blog!

While you’re here, we wanted to give you a little love, so here’s a poem for you. I can guarantee it will brighten your day, for more than one reason:

Roses are red.
Stilettos are tall.
Jimmy Choo…
For one and all!

And just for fun — a kaleidoscope for (bored) grown-ups. Seriously, though. It’s awesome.
