As my soul-less co-editor (she’s a Ginger, you see) and I hopped into her car preceding a recent night out, Terryl commented on the fact that neither of us had made the switch from our large, kitchen sink-toting handbags to evening out-worthy mini-bags. It wasn’t until later that I realized: my making this transition from big to little is a rarity.
This seems nonsensical, as I think, talk and write about handbags literally daily, and thus should jump at the chance for some variety in the accessory. Yet, I simply do not.
With some thinking, I can point to four reasons why this transit just doesn’ t happen.
Seems impractical.
1. Laziness/time constraint - Though in hindsight, transferring a few necessities from one bag to another seems easy and quick enough, in the moment, it’s just not. Not sure how to explain this phenomena, but I assume my inherent lateness (thanks, Mom) has something to do with it.
2. I really like my day bag - Your favorite bag’s your favorite bag, regardless of size or situation-appropriateness. It is my favorite bag and I just like to have it around. Period.
3. I need all seven tubes of lip gloss - Maybe it’s not lip gloss, but a larger-than-life wallet or an umbrella or a nonperishable. (Terryl had a can of tomato soup in her bag that night, I kid you not.) Some things ya feel ya jus’ need, whether you technically could survive the evening without them or not.
4. I don’t have an evening bag with which I’m obsessed - It’s not that I don’t have evening bags I like, as I own at least two of which I’m quite fond. Why then do they sit bored in my closet? Because I wouldn’t take a bullet for them; they don’t complete me. This sentiment may change though with this impending purchase.
What about you? Do always change your bag for a night out? Or are you plagued by one (or all) of the points above, like me?

My bag is the roughly the size of a Volkswagon, and I figure that if I need something during the day, I’ll need it at night, too. Thus, I don’t change bags in the middle of the day.
haha “roughly the size of a Volkswagon.”
I am a huge fan of giant bags with across the body straps. Hands free and resourceful. I too carry my life with me in my bag and honestly those little knick-knacks become more handy on evening out then in my day adventures. I mean how many times have I helped some poor soul in the ladies room with my mini bottle of contact solution, Tylenol, or hair accessories. This may make me sound like a “purse hoarder” but I never know when I am going to need the option between my coral lipstick or bright red lip gloss. Recently, I made a new discovery in my favorite handbag- a pocket which I never new how to use just became my banana pocket. Yeah, thats right, I said banana. Nothing ever fit very well in this pocket until I threw a banana in there the other day when I was running late. Now I pretty much just keep a banana in there at all times. Who’s hungry?
Haha. SO perfect. I totally agree re: knick-knacks being more handy at night. During the day, you’re typically in your car and thus have ample storage space for “necessities.” However, when out at night, you’re on foot without le vehicle; you obviously need to carry your own personal glove compartment.
PS. I know you, for one, didn’t need the ‘why Gingers are soul-less’ explanation linked above, which makes me smile.
I change my bags ALL the time. I completely admit I’m 100% addicted to purses. I have yet to buy an evening bag though. I would like to- I love the look.
I totally agree. I love the chic lightness of just carrying a tiny purse - really lets an outfit stand out - but that practically issue gets me every time.
That bag looks ridiculous on katie Holmes. The bag is almost as big as her!!! It’s completely overpowering!!!
Amen! I wonder how much it weighs!
I can not carry a small purse. I will leave it (unintentionally) at my first stop of the day or night. I think the large bag that Katie Holmes has is just to much. I need something with a little might. Something like a satchel or hobo fits me well…something I came with and something I won’t leave.
Re: leaving you bag to the first stop on the night - I totally empathize. I can remember more than one occasion in which I’ve had to drag my friends on an inadvertent quest to find my missing handbag. All about the hobo!
Adoraqble, adorable, bag that is possible to win. It has great detail, and a perfect fit for me. I just luv all the animal prints, but I’m partial to the Giraffe. This one even has feet on the bottom, I’ve looked at my fair share and thats a rarity. This hobo has might, a touch of bling and I couldn’t have designed it better my self Final word, its going to be mine one way or the other, but I hope I win it.
Looks like she’s going on a vacation with that handbags.
