Handbags have been used widely by women and men through the ages, although the first mention of such an accessory does not emerge until the 14th century. It is interesting to trace the history of the evolution of handbags over the centuries.
Fourteenth and fifteenth centuries
The first handbags were actually pouches or pockets that were attached to girdles and used to carry coins and other valuables. They were used by both men and women, and were initially made of hide. They were simple and crude designs without much embellishments and were worn under the clothes. They slowly became a symbol of betrothal and had elaborate embroidery, especially the women’s pouches.
Sixteenth to eighteenth centuries
Pouches were still mostly worn inside rather than outside clothes. Other than money, some also carried sweet smelling powdered herbs in these pouches, then called swete bagges. Large cloth sling bags were used by men while traveling.
Only towards the middle of the eighteenth century, handbags started being worn outside clothes by women and started evolving as a women’s fashion accessory. They became more ornate and delicate, and were called reticules. Till the end of this century, there were no bag makers, and pouches were made by dressmakers for their clients.
Nineteenth century
This was the period that saw a drastic change in the use of handbags as well as the first use of the term “handbag”. Mere pouches became small luggage bags that women could carry around with them. Different kinds of materials started being used to make handbags, from leather to exquisite fabrics. Small knitted bags were used by men and women to carry coins and small valuables. This century also saw the emergence of specialized luggage makers, some of who are the biggest names in fashion today, including Hermes and Louis Vuitton.
Twentieth century
Never have handbags evolved as much as in this century, with each decade bringing with it drastic changes in handbag fashion. Options ranged from classic handbags to small clutches, shoulder bags, cloth satchels, knitted and crocheted bags. They were made from leather, fabric, metal, and lace, and embellished with beads, embroidery and prints. This century saw the rise of the biggest handbag brands till date.
Present day trends
Today, handbags are available in all sizes, shapes, colors, materials and prices. You can choose one according to your needs or have them customized to your unique tastes. Take your pick, because handbags are definitely here to stay.
