Fall Styles: The best looks trending for the season

A new season is once again coming on fast! With 2014 pushing through the summer, the fall styles have made their appearance on the runways. Wondering what the top trends are for makeup and nails? Here are the top three for eyes, lips, and nails that come straight from the runway. We’ve also picked out some handbags to match so you can be prepared with a whole look that will make you the person to watch no matter where you are. Take a look and then tell us what fall styles you are excited about!

1) Eyelashes - Every great picture needs a frame, and eyelashes are the frames of your gorgeous eyes. This season, it’s big and bold to bring back the sixties-style glamour. To get the look from the runway, line your upper lid with a black pencil eyeliner and smudge it into your waterline. Then top it off with three layers of mascara, combing lashes between each layer. If you want, falsies are also a great way to get a full lash look. Use small clusters mixed in with your real lashes. The most effective method is to apply the glue to the cluster, then wait 30 seconds before pressing them onto your lash line. Top it all off with a layer of mascara. Voila! A gorgeous frame to set your eyes apart from all the others. Pair with our bold Kate Studded Handbag and nude eyeshadow for the perfect anytime look.

2) Berry Lips - For fall 2014, the trend is stained lips. The color: berry. From Michael Kors and Isabel Marant comes the flattering-on-everyone lip style. To get the look, choose a deep wine color in a lipstick or gloss, then just tap the color lightly onto your lips with your finger. To set the color, blot it with blotting paper or in a pinch use tissues. You’ll get that delicious “just bitten” look that will emphasize your lip shape in all the right ways. Match to a new wallet with texture, like our Jamison Small Wallet.

3) Nails - Personally, I can’t help but change my nail polish every week. But there are times when a color or style comes around that makes me want to keep it forever. This season, there are three amazing styles using that same amazing berry color to match your lips. First we have a solid all-over color in a deep pomegranate. Invest an extra couple of dollars in a polish that is chip-resistant to get the most out of the effort. Second, using this same pomegranate polish and a nude color polish, you can do a beautiful berry stripe design. Hold a thin brush at the base of your nail and slowly move your finger away to get a great freehand stripe of the berry color over the nude. Third, try different cutout designs! You can use tape to block off sections of your nail at a time to get perfect lines. Now show off those gorgeous nails with a beautiful new clutch. Try the Tracey Convertible Clutch, a favorite of ours.

Yay or Nay: What makeup products are worth your time and money?

We have all had that experience when we go to the makeup counter, and we try EVERYTHING as we chat with the makeup techs. It’s fun to get new makeup, but staying on budget is important. Here are a few tips on how to get the most fun bang for your buck!

foundation tips

1) Foundation: This product goes over pretty much all the skin on your face, so make sure it’s something good. Do a test patch to make sure you don’t have an allergic reaction to the ingredients, and get one that is right for your skin type.

Eye Shadow Purchase

2) Eye shadow: When you buy a good eye shadow, it’s not going to cake throughout the day and it’s not going to be difficult to apply. Plus, when you buy good eye shadow, you don’t have to spend money on shadow base products.

3) Lipstick/Lip Gloss: Two features of good lipstick - staying power and texture. Don't be afraid to try multiple types and shades to see how well they work with your skin tone and lip skin type.

3) Lipstick/Lip Gloss: Two features of good lipstick - staying power and texture. Don’t be afraid to try multiple types and shades to see how well they work with your skin tone and lip skin type.

4) Moisturizer: I know this falls into more of a skin care category, but because it works alongside your makeup to give you just the right look, splurge on a moisturizer that is going to keep your pores clear and that will help your skin stay supple. Get samples from different places and try them for a week. After that, then decide which one works best with your skin and your other products and go from there.

10 Fave Life Hacks

Lately there have been many articles about different life hacks to save time and money-I even saw one website with 1,000 different hacks! I think it would take more time to read through those than we would save through those tips, so I’ve picked my top 10 favorite hacks from across the web. Let us know what your favorites are by sharing in the comments or posting with us on our social media.

  1. I just had a need for this little trick this morning. Don’t you hate it when you have a tube of product and you know there’s a lot left but you just can’t get to it?? this little trick can save quite a bit of the product you paid for, and it’s one of the easiest things to do. Just cut open the tube and scoop the goop into a plastic jar. Now it’s easy to get to!

    reddit.com

  2. I admit that I often color my hair at home to save money and time. But one downside is the dye can easily stain my skin! To prevent having marks near my hairline while still getting all the way to my roots is to line my face with conditioner. Vaseline works well, too.

    sheknows.com

  3. Use a rubber band to get perfect french manicure tips. We’ve seen many versions of this, but I think this knot method is the easiest.

    nailnerd.com

  4. I recently had my nails painted with yellow and blue nail polish. Unfortunately, after I removed the polish the nails with the yellow stayed yellow! I tried this little trick, and voila! White nails again. Whew!

    soulsneverwrinkle.net

  5. Working at handbagheaven.com I have built up quite a collection of purses. This little tip saved me a lot of money on special hooks and more hangers, and it’s so easy to get access to the purse I want. Just hang the purses using shower curtain hooks!
  6. Ok. Who doesn’t use bobby pins? I use them quite often, but I often lose them or don’t have quick easy access to them. I found this hack extremely useful!! Put the bobby pins in an empty Tic-Tac container. Perfect for taking with you in your purse or clutch, and even for storage in the bathroom drawer.

    doitandhow.com

  7. Here’s another hair-related hack. Similar idea to the bobby pin idea, but for elastics. Use a cheap carabiner!

    Store Hair Elastics

    pinterest.com

  8. Got makeup on your shirt? It can be easy to get foundation or other makeup on your clothes as you get dressed or as you are applying makeup. Simply use a bit of shaving cream and wipe the makeup off your clothes. Now you have cleaned up and don’t need to change, and best of all it won’t damage your clothes! My favorite shaving cream for this trick is Barbasol.

    Shave Time

  9. Add a simple wall sit at the end of a run or bike ride. Just do three wall sits at 30-60 seconds each and you will see a noticeable difference in your muscle tone and strength! You can even do this when you wake up to get your blood going and help you kick start your energy for the day. Best thing is you can do them anywhere.

    Wall Sits Anywhere

    dietsinreview.com

  10. My last favorite hack is so amazingly simple I almost can’t believe it. Got a paper cut? Got chapstick? Apply chapstick to the cut and it stops the pain and it’s gone within a day. Sweet relief!

Beach Bag 101: Packing the Perfect Vacation

Okay, Spring Breakers, the countdown is on! It’s only a short matter of time before you head to the beach for a relaxing (or maybe a little wild) vacation. While you’re agonizing over a perfect wardrobe for the week, don’t forget about your beach-going necessities. While spring break is typically a time to put away the books and let loose, let’s examine the science behind beach bag essentials. Get ready to take notes!

Here’s what you’ll need for a perfect vacation in the sun, surf, and sand. Welcome to Beach Bag 101.

Beach bag essentials

Featured handbag: Madison Chevron Tote

Sunglasses: No need to harp on the importance of protecting your eyes from the sun (but seriously, it’s dangerous), because you’ll also need a pair of these babies for style and comfort. Be careful when handling your shades, as suntan lotions and abrasive sand can do some damage to your lenses. Be sure to wipe your hands before touching them and store them in a protective case if you happen to take them off (only to say hi to that cute lifeguard, of course). Our favorite look-for-less sunnies of late are, of course, from out sister store at Sunglass Warehouse. Check ‘em out!

Sunscreen: Getting a deep golden glow may be your number one priority, but slathering on the sunscreen needs to come first! Tip: The cheapest sunscreen option isn’t always the best. Be sure to choose something that protects against both UVA and UVB rays with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30. Also, be sure to put your sunscreen on 30 minutes before going into the sun and reapply as needed, especially after going into the water. Shiseido provides a great sun care line with varying protection factors.

Entertainment: While some of us are perfectly content to look at the ocean or listen to the sound of the waves with our eyes closed, others just need something to do. Take this opportunity to listen to music on your phone or grab a good ol’ paperback book or magazine. Make a vacay playlist to act as the soundtrack for your trip, or take the time to read a bestseller that you just haven’t had time to catch up with. The choice is yours — it’s your vacation after all!

Water: Staying hydrated when spending time in the sun is essential. You may be tempted to reach for a sugary soda or sports drink, but these drinks can have a diuretic effect, which removes water from your body, therefore making it easier for you to become dehydrated. So stick with the H2O and drink up! Not a fan of plain water? Add lemon slices or frozen berries to make water taste more exciting!

Chapstick: Don’t forget to protect your lips! Like the rest of your skin, they can burn and even blister. (How’s that for a ruined spring break?) Choose something with an SPF of at least 15 and reapply as needed. Look for a product that is water resistant, or go with something tinted to give your glowing skin a pop of healthy color. Fresh Sugar Lip Treatments are a fave because they come in tinted colors and have plenty of SPF!

Beach towel: Whether you plan to go in the water or not, you’re going to need a large towel. To avoid sticky, sandy skin while sunbathing, bring an old sheet and lay it down before you put your towel down. Another great tip? Choose an ultra bright color or bold print for your beach towel so you can easily find it after getting in the water or going on a long walk. That way, you can keep an eye on your things more easily!

What are your beach bag must-haves? Share them with us on Facebook or Twitter!

Pucker Up: Your 2014 Beauty Resolutions

Welp … 2013 is officially over, and so are all of last year’s bad beauty habits. That’s right, this year we’re kicking your beauty routine into high gear — that means going a little lighter on the winged eyeliner/red lip combo, Taylor! With the help of some 2014 spring runway inspiration and a little thing we like to call our beauty conscience, here’s your list of 2014 resolutions:

1. Get Organized

Most of our resolutions involve getting organized — whether it’s finances, overstuffed closets, or beauty routines. Keeping your makeup organized makes getting ready a breeze, and gives you more time in the morning to catch some much-needed z’s. Take a tip from NARS and organize your makeup by type. Once you’ve grouped your lipsticks, eyeshadows, glosses, primers, brushes, etc. together, be sure to store them in a way that suits you. We’re obsessed this makeup organization Pin-spiration!

2. Be More Daring

This year, vow to be a little more daring with your beauty routine. You can interpret this any way you want — just as long as you step out of your comfort zone a little bit! Baffled by how to use a lash curler? Head to Sephora and ask them to teach you! Always wanted to try the uber-popular bright lip trend? Go ahead, swipe some on! Dreaming of changing your hair color as often as Emma Stone? Make 2014 your year of ‘do switcheroos! After all, you never know until you try, and you might be pleasantly surprised.

3. Keep it Simple

2014 spring runways boasted an “enhanced minimalism” when it came to makeup. To everyone else, this just means: keep it simple! Instead of caking on that blush, tracing under your eyelids one time too many, or gluing on those fake lashes, try to refer back to the basics. Highlighting your features with just a hint of foundation, blush, highlighter, mascara, and gloss shows off your natural beauty! Just remember: A little goes a long way.

4. Grow Brows, Grow!

No more pencil-thin brows! We know how pesky those strays can be, but please no over-plucking this year, okay? Spring 2014 runways were jam-packed with big browed beauties, and It Girls like Cara Delevingne are proof that thick is beyond beautiful. Plus, bushier brows accentuate your gorgeous eyes and brighten your face. Ask your stylist how you two can work together to grow yours out this year.

5. Go Faux

It’s January, but you’re already thinking about going to the tanning bed for that gorgeous spring break glow. BUT WAIT JUST ONE MINUTE. First things first, swipe the words “tanning bed” from your beauty vocabulary completely. It’s horrible for you (bulbs boosts your risk of melanoma by 75 percent) and it prematurely ages you, too. In 2014, be good to your skin and your future self by turning to faux self tanners. Our favorites of the moment are anything by Jergens, and if you’re looking to splurge, try hitting up the department stores at your local mall. We love anything by Dior and Clinique.

6. Master the Updo

Lucky for your morning routine, updos are here to stay! For those of you who shy away from anything fancier than a ponytail, you’re seriously missing out! The Beauty Department has amazing tutorials for you to try, and they’re so easy that even Snooki could do them. A few of our favorites for 2014 include the milkmaid braids, the ’50s pony, and the twist-flip bun. Don’t forget to grab a fine-toothed comb for teasing, along with lots of bobbies for defying gravity!

7. Protect & Nourish

If there’s one beauty resolution you make this year, let it be to protect and nourish your skin. Your skin is your most important feature, so be sure to treat it right — starting with SPF. Always, always apply a broad spectrum sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection with at least 30 SPF. That’s right — 30 SPF! Don’t skimp on the coverage or assume that your makeup has SPF. Also, make sure you know how to care for your skin properly using the right washes, moisturizers, and makeup. We are obsessed with this infographic featuring four steps to healthy, radiant skin.

Cheers to a beautiful you in the new year!

5 Fast Beauty & Fashion Emergency Remedies

Whether you’re at school, the office, or on a date, there’s nothing that can ruin your day faster than a fashion or beauty disaster! From a broken zipper to a food stain, there are some inconveniences that just can’t be avoided. We’ve all been there, but never fear — we’ve got some quick fixes that will take you from code red to smooth sailing in no time flat.

1. Attack of the Meal Stain

We’re all for trying new trends, but we don’t suggest wearing your meal. Unfortunately, messes happen — especially when you’re eating on the go — and a stain is left in its wake. We recommend carrying some kind of stain removal stick or wipes in your purse. Stains can happen anywhere, so why not be prepared?

2. Frizzy Hair

So you’re getting ready for the day, and your hair is beauty queen-approved. Fast-forward to arrival at your destination, and the heat and humidity have left you looking more like the Lion King. While we always suggest the proactive approach of using anti-humidity styling products, it’s always good to have backups in your handbag. Anti-humidity hairspray can help you tame the frizz and keep your tresses in place. In a pinch, rub a very small amount of hand lotion on your hands and lightly pat down the wild hairs.

3. Broken Pants Zipper

You’re sitting at your desk, only to discover than your pants zipper is broken, leaving you exposed to the world. Ugh, is it Friday yet?! No worries. This one’s easy! Knot a rubber band through the zipper, loop it around the button or clasp of your pants, and voila! That sneaky little thing isn’t going anywhere now!

4. Shiny Afternoon Face

Between moisturizers, primers, and cosmetics, it’s not uncommon to have an oil slick lurking on the surface of your face by the afternoon. We recommend carrying some oil blotting papers in your purse. These are very affordable and easy to find in any drugstore or cosmetics department.

5. Deodorant Residue

For those who forget to dress before putting on the smell-good stuff, or those who change their outfit at the last second before heading out the door, you may be left with the dreaded white stripes. While your first instinct may be to go for the toilet paper or paper towel, this could leave you with an even bigger mess. Use any item made of cloth (hint: a sock works great!) to rub off the residue.

There you have it! Quick fixes that will have you looking tip-top again in no time. Any cool fixes you know of that you want to share with us? Comment below!

12 Items to Always Keep in Your Purse

Not all bags are created equal. Some are small, some are large. However, we can all agree on one thing: The contents inside these bags are very, very important. What all does a girl need to carry?

Your bag can get loaded down with way too many things, so before you turn into Mary Poppins, we’ve put together a list of the 12 essentials. Read on to learn what the absolute musts are! (Psst: Going to a wedding? Then you’ll need to know this!)

Learn more about these items here!

  1. Breath Mints. You know what it’s like: You’ve just had an amazing meal, but it was heavy — and we mean heavy — on the garlic. Take our advice and don’t get mistaken for a vampire hunter. Be sure to always have some mints to freshen your breath!
  2. Nail file. Nothing is quite as irritating as getting a chip in your nail and not being able to do a single thing about it. Carry a file with you so that you can repair nail nuisances stat.
  3. Compact. Don’t leave home without a mirror. Period. This cute one from Sephora comes in four different colors, plus it has two different mirrors — one regular, and one with magnification.
  4. Hand Sanitizer. It is a dirty world out there, and there’s nothing wrong with wanting clean hands before you eat. This Method one is a fantastic choice because it’s cruelty-free, which means no animal testing in sight. Plus, it comes in some pretty packaging.
  5. Bobby Pins. Ever tried to grow your bangs out? Ever been caught in a wind gust? We’ve all been there. We’ve all been miserable through it. Do yourself a favor and keep a few bobby pins in your bag to clip up those strays. Why not have some fun, too, while you’re at it, and get them in a bold pattern?
  6. Pen and Notebook. Essential. Sure, you have a smartphone, but you never know when you’re going to need an actual pen and pad of paper. This handmade set from Etsy? Adorable. Etsy is full of cute options like this one, and you can customize them just the way you like.
  7. Pain Medicine. Ohhh, the pain. Headache, backache, sore muscles, you name it. The pain may catch you off-guard, but you have a quick riposte!
  8. Snack. Stuck in traffic. At an event where the cheapest food item is $5.00 (and that’s just for the pretzel — not including the cheese cup). Meeting ran late and you have an appointment after work, and now there’s no way you can grab dinner. All of this is no problem since you have a (healthy!) snack in your purse to hold you over.
  9. Spot Remover. Tide To-Go Erasers = lifesavers! All you do is squeeze the edges and wipe. Hint: Buy the 4-pack, because it’s much cheaper than buying them individually.
  10. Lip Gloss. Even if you’re in a hurry, you should always make sure to toss on a bit of gloss as you’re running out the door. It glams up your look in just three seconds!
  11. Band-Aids. Yeouch! Those super-cute new flats you just bought and couldn’t wait to wear out and about? They’re giving your heels blisters — but never fear. You’ve got Band-Aids with you. A quick “Hang on a sec, girls,” and you’re bandaged up and ready to get walkin’ again in no time.
  12. Deodorant. Goes without sayin’. This awesome little stick is handmade and poured into a lip balm tube, so it can fit into the tiniest of purses.

Now you’re prepared and ready to hit the world without anything to stop you. What did you think of our list? Anything to add?

Prevent Summer’s Top 5 Beauty Blunders

Oh the joys of summer: bronze skin, sun-bleached hair, and perfectly manicured toes to fit into your cute little sandals. Unfortunately, our best beauty secrets can quickly turn into our worst beauty nightmares!

Take a look at these summer beauty missteps to find out how you can prevent them and maintain your status as a summer goddess:

1. Awkward tan lines

So you found an adorable swimsuit with thick straps or cute little cutouts, and you’re super pumped to rock it at the pool. Unfortunately, you didn’t think about the tan lines it might leave behind afterwards — Eek! If you wear a lot of strapless or sleeveless tops, shop around for a bandeau bikini or strapless one piece. Nowadays, many swimsuits even come with removable straps for basking in the sun.

2. Sunglasses Sunburn

Oh, Kim … we’d say this is a pretty big beauty blunder! While we never recommend going into the sun without sunscreen, there is still a chance that you’ll get a sunburn. Be aware of how long you stay in the sun and be sure to reapply sunscreen every so often if you are exposed for very long. Also, be sure to remove your sunglasses in intervals to prevent the raccoon look so dashingly (not) worn by the middle Kardashian sister.

3. Damaged Hair

From spending time in the sun to overexposure to saltwater and chlorine, your hair can become über damaged in the summertime. If you are a blonde and plan to spend lots of time at the pool this summer, look for shampoo and conditioner that offers chlorine color protection. Regardless of your hair color, looking for products with SPF in them is also a necessity, and be sure to invest in a nice repairing mask to use once a week.

4. An Over-Tan

Whether you spend hours in the sun or go the sunless route, being too tan or overly streaky is never a good thing. Limit your time in the sun, and be sure to wear at least SPF 30. If you avoid the sun and layer on the self-bronzer, be sure to use an exfoliant and moisturizer to prevent your skin from turning 50 shades of orange!

5. Unsightly Feet

Want to avoid dry, calloused feet, but don’t have money to spend on a salon pedicure? Head to the drugstore and invest in a pumice stone and some foot cream to keep your heels and toes soft and pretty!
