Fabric vs. Leather bags

Bag lovers the world over are overwhelmed with the options available to buy - and there’s something for every occasion and budget! But if you’re wondering about what to add to your collection, what will it be - a fabric bag or a leather one?firstsnow-9_zps84647a83

Fabric bags, even from the stable of the same designer, are likely to cost less than similar ones in leather. The math is pretty simple really. Leather is more expensive than your average cotton or jute fabric, and that gets passed on to you, the buyer. So if you are looking for a bag to use sparingly for a couple of years, or something to last you one summer or two of daily use, then a fabric bag may be good. This will allow you to change to a new color or style whenever you need to, without taking a hit on your bank balance.

But leather might last longer

Good quality leather, while pricey, is usually well crafted and tougher than the average fabric bag. This means a leather bag may last a generation or two if it is well looked after. It handles regular use nicely and unless you’re rough with it, it should serve you well for a few years at the very least. And not all cloth bags come cheap either. Some designer fabric bags can cost way more than a high street leather bag.

There was a time when leather bags meant you had to stick with a few staid colors. And if you wanted something fun in a color or print, fabric was the only way to get it. Not so much anymore. With improved dyeing techniques, leather is now available in a wide variety of vibrant trendy colors. And prints and patterns too have made their debut with leather bags sporting beautiful designs.

Formal or informal

Most fabric bags give off a more casual vibe, making them a great choice for more relaxed work environments, or for weekend wear. Leather on the other hand can look more dressy and is a good choice in formal settings like the workplace or at more high-brow restaurants and the like.

It comes down to taste

So in the battle of fabric vs. leather, there really are no clear winners. Each kind of bag has its place. Every girl would do well to have a few of each in her wardrobe so she’s prepared for every kind of occasion!
