Recipe Remix: Healthier Versions of Your Favorite Foods

It happens every spring. Somehow, bathing suit season sneaks up on me. I’m forced to hit the gym like a mad woman and start substituting my fried foods for fresh veggies-all the things I should do religiously year-round. If you’re anything like me you’ll enjoy today’s round-up of healthy versions of America’s favorite comfort foods. I hope that they get your taste-buds watering and give you a few ideas for tonight’s dinner. And remember, no feeling guilty after two (or three) of these chocolate chip cookies.

Chili

Chili is a staple in many homes. It’s simple to make, delicious, and makes great leftovers. Skinny Taste took the traditional chili recipe and turned it upside down by substituting lean ground turkey for ground beef, and stuffing it full of veggies and ingredients lower in sodium than their original counterparts. Check out this healthy recipe and enjoy!

The Burger

There’s nothing like a good burger to complete a summer night’s dinner. Try something new by substituting delicious sweet potatoes for the traditional red meat burger. Healthy Happy Life shared a recipe for sweet potato veggie burgers. These delicious burgers are stuffed full of fiber, protein, and vitamins thanks to the sweet potato, beans, and spices. Top them off with avacado, lettuce, onion, and whatever yummy additions your heart desires. These are a cookout must-have!

Macaroni and Cheese

I don’t think a week passed when I didn’t have mac ‘n cheese growing up—not that I’m complaining. This American classic is delicious, and not especially good for you. Give Martha Steweart’s updated version of macaroni and cheese a try! It calls for pureed squash and skim ricotta cheese, and trust me, this is one tasty update!

Pizza

What family doesn’t love pizza? None. Try this quick lavash pizza from Skinny Taste and satisfy that ‘za craving. This recipe uses the Middle Eastern flatbread, Lavash, which can be found at your local grocery store. Divy up the dough and let your kids (or hubby) create their own personal pizza. This family bonding experience is not only fun, but low in calories!

Apple Pie

No holiday is complete without a delicious apple pie for dessert! Unfortunately, the original is full of buttery and sugary goodness that isn’t always good for you. That’s Fit rennovated the recipe though, subsitituting half of the apples for fiber-rich jicama, opting for Splenda instead of sugar, and creating a whole-wheat crust that’s low in butter. Try this recipe out for your next family dinner!

Chocolate Chip Cookies

Go visit one of my favorite food bloggers, Chocolate Covered Katie to see her take on America’s favorite cookie. Katie subsitutes healthier baking ingredients like oat flour and uses far less sugar and oil in her chocolate chip recipe. I’ve tried many of her recipes in the past and they’ve all been absolutely delicious; she won’t let you down!

Have a happy healthy weekend!

Around The World With Eight Key Bags

The girls here at Handbag Heaven are itching to take a trip somewhere, so I thought it might be fun to spend the afternoon daydreaming and escaping to some of my favorite vacation destinations.

Ready to take a trip? Of course you are ;) Pack your bags, and let the excursion begin!

On Handbag Heaven Airlines, we celebrate each culture’s norms, foods, and language — and fashion is prioritized, of course! So fasten those seat belts, and put your seats in the upright position; in case of an emergency, use the oxygen masks, and remember the seat cushions are life preservers.

Traveling The World

1.Yellow Clutch // 2. Zebra Handbag // 3. Tan Bag 4. Red Satchel // 5. Exotic Handbag //6. Brown Satchel // 7. Green Clutch // 8. Fringed Handbag

We are making our way around the world in eight key bags (get it!?). Oh the places we’ll go!

After a quick flight down south, the journey begins.

Stop 1- Brazil: Reese Clutch

The famous Rio De Janeiro’s impeccable and vibrant colors remind me of the Reese Clutch. Fortunately, this stop happens to be during the annual festival of Carnival. Packed with tons of people and huge celebrations, this place is full of color combinations that are dazzling. I even saw a yellow and pink outfit that matches the clutch; both have amazing appeal. After all the fun, it’s time to fly!

Stop 2- Africa: Carmen Bag

We’re landed and loaded up for a safari. Spotted (more like striped!) in the distance is a beautiful zebra. Immediately, the Carmen Bag comes to mind. These amazing black and white animals inspire a perfect pattern to accent any outfit. Great trip so far, and I’m ready for the next stop.

Stop 3- Australia: Megan Satchel

Let’s go Down Under, mate! With hopes to see the Great Barrier Reef and the Opera House, we first trek through the Outback. As a kangaroo hops nearby, I think of the Megan Satchel. Both the bag and kangaroo have beautiful, tan complexions — and honestly, plenty of pouch space! This journey has been long, but happily, it continues!

Stop 4- South Korea: Sabrina Satchel

Here in South Korea, I have to taste the country’s signature dish, kimchi. Packed with a powerful taekwondo kick, the red chili powder flavor makes a girl stop in her tracks. I begin to think about the fiery red Sabrina Satchel that provides the same power-packing punch to any outfit. With water in hand, I head on.

Stop 5- Russia: Jamison Shoulder Bag

Russia is packed with amazing architecture and ornate design. I stumble across a vendor selling matryoshka dolls that resemble the same color palette as the Jamison Shoulder Bag. These carved dolls, which each have a smaller doll inside, have intricate details painted all over. Just like the Jamison, they are perfection! I’m sad to be nearing the end of the trip; fortunately, there are a few more stops.

Stop 6- France: Monroe Satchel

I need to wear my high fashion pieces here because Paris is the home of Chanel. Lounging under the Eiffel Tower, I see tweed-inspired designs all over, which remind me of the chocolate tweed Monroe Satchel. Both Paris and Monroe are chic and elegant. Awe-inspired, I feel a need to stop for a croissant. As I finish eating, I prepare for the next stop.

Stop 7- Ireland: Luna Clutch

Have you ever seen anything as green and serene as Ireland? The homeland of St. Patrick’s Day is breathtaking, and this foliage reminds me of the striking green color of the Luna Clutch. I absolutely adore both with their sleek exteriors. It’s sad my trip is ending, but I’m ready to head home.

Stop 8- USA: August Bag

As I land in the Midwest, I put on my cowboy hat, boots, and get out my August Bag. I loved the journey and other cultures, but fully embrace the fact that this is my inspired look.

Around the world in 8-key bags was so much fun and certainly style-savvy, don’t you think!? It was a blast to see how each unique design resembles a different country’s culture. But now, it’s time to sleep because jet lag is no fun :)

Have a great trip and the loveliest of weekends!

It’s the time of year when everyone’s thinking about vacations. Students are gearing up for a summer abroad, and others are making plans to use time off work in a far away land. Many of us Handbag Heaven gals have spent time abroad, while in college or with our families, so we compiled a list of overseas handbag essentials. The Sigma Pocket Satchel is our pick for overseas travel because it literally has a pocket for everything. It also features a long strap so you can wear this bag across your body, leaving your hands free for important things like a crêpe, taking photos of the seaside, or searching a map for your next sightseeing adventure.

what to pack for international travel Here’s the rundown of some essentials for traveling internationally:

  • Camera + camera case, extra battery, and memory card
  • Passport + tickets, itinerary, etc.
  • Prescriptions
  • Gum
  • Chapstick
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Travel toothbrush
  • Money pouch — don’t be a victim of pick-pocketing!
  • Tylenol
  • Travel toilet paper — just bein’ real here, folks
  • City guide
  • Journal — jot down memories from your time abroad
  • Face wipes
  • Hair brush
  • Makeup Bag
  • Face powder
  • Travel-sized dry shampoo — freshen your hair after a long flight or day
What else do you keep in your bag while traveling in a foreign country? We want to hear!
Also, if you have cool summer plans that involve a beach, sightseeing, or amazing food — we’d be happy to squeeze into a small bag and join you :-)

Steal the Look

With great fashion inspiration resources like blogs, Pinterest, and even our own Style Guide, we love finding new ways to pull together an outfit. Layering fun pieces together, mixing patterns, and trying out new styles is a true art. When it comes to seeking inspiration, Atlantic-Pacific is one of our favorite go-to fashion blogs! We love how she mixes dressy and casual, contrasts patterns, and always layers! Here’s one of our favorite looks that demonstrates how to pull off the transition from winter to spring.

{jacket} {dress} {belt} {watch} {lipstick} {bracelets} {satchel} {cat eye sunglasses} {pumps}

The standouts:

  • Contrast: She pairs a feminine floral print with a green army jacket. It’s so unexpectedly sexy! Like she’s borrowing her man’s coat…
  • Signature Frames: Those cat eye sunglasses are featured in just about every one of her outfits. So classic!
  • Nude pumps: These soft pink pumps add length to the legs. It’s a nifty little visual trick - and it works!
  • The bag: Naturally, our favorite part of her look is the bag. But that Celine tote doesn’t have a price tag we can jive with. Thank goodness, our Rebecca Doctor Satchel has the same look for MUCH cheaper.
And there you have it!

Pinterest Roundup: Pretty Prints & Patterns

Spring has officially sprung, and for the fasionistas here at Handbag Heaven, that means only one thing: spring prints and patterns! It’s time to break out the nautical stripes, the preppy gingham, and the oh-so-fun colorblocking. Incorporating these fun designs into your wardrobe is a great way to mix up a boring outfit or show off your fun personality.

What’s even better is that this year’s springtime prints are popular in the home too! From floor to ceiling, decorators are adding touches of pattern to liven up dull rooms and outdoor spaces. So take a peek at spring’s hottest trends and add a few to your wardrobe, or maybe even your bedroom!

Stripes

Nothing says warm weather quite like nautical-inspired stripes. Horizontal, vertical, diagonal, any way you slice ‘em, stripes are “in” for both apparel and decor.

Skirt | Curtains

Chevron

You can’t go wrong with a chevron-print dress or top! The striking pattern will turn heads and draw compliments. For the home, there are a bevy of products featuring this pretty print!

Dress | Chair

Ikat

Go a little tribal with Ikat prints or textiles! Ikat dresses, tunics, and tops are perfect for the carefree girl, while Ikat table runners, pillows, or lamp shades are great for spicing up a boring room.

Tunic | Table Runners

Colorblocking

Pairing bright, solid-colored pieces might feel strange at first, but embrace the brights and stand out a little! Have you seen our colorblocking handbags? They’re beautiful…sigh.

Dress | Decor

Gingham

I had to throw one in there for the guys (or for the girls who will style their guys). But ladies, there plenty of cute gingham dresses, skirts, and even bathing suits available!

Bow Tie | Ceiling

Enjoy the first weekend of spring!

P.S.

We want to brag about our features in Skinny Scoop! We’re part of Best Purses and Bags and Stylish Bloggers lists!

It’s All Black and White to Me

What is it about the combination of black and white that looks so classic? Maybe it’s because vintage photography is all black and white. Regardless, even a super-modern space that uses a colorless palette feels very timeless. Here’s to enjoying the beauty of lack of color every once in a while…
