Celebrity-Inspired Looks: Print Mixing

One trend we’re loving right now is print mixing. Not only is this look très chic, but it’s also easy on the wallet. Chances are you already have some florals, stripes, or zigzags in your closet, which is all you need to be a mixing maven! Go ahead and grab some of your favorite prints, read our tips, and stylishly step out the door.

1. My Personal Favorite:

Florals and Stripes. These two are secret lovers, in my opinion. Once thought of as “just friends,” this relationship has gone to the next level. There isn’t much to say here other than stripes and florals look perfect together. For the best combination, go with a cute floral blouse and a striped skirt (like look 3).

2. The Key: Balance:

Take note of hues within these intricate patterns. There must be a balance between neutrals and brights, not a competition. If matching two different patterns is too brave, then mix the same prints – like stripe on stripe. PS — Do not lose focus on texture; that is essential, too!

3. Easy Peezy:

Your prints should not be battling for attention. Do not pose the prints as enemies; instead make them allies. Mix prints in the same color family. By wearing shades of the same color, the ensemble will maintain continuity and be harmonious (like look 1).

4. Bottoms & Accessories:

Lastly, patterned pants are delightful. These statement pieces are best paired with a complementary pattern or color (like look 2). If pants are too brave, accessorizing is the perfect touch. Use pieces such as scarves, handbags, or belts to tie the mixed pattern ensemble together. However, don’t get too matchy-matchy!

Print mixing is exciting and can create some fun ensembles! See what you can create with your florals, scarves, or zigzag skirts. Keep this in mind: “The trick is to choose patterns that are complementary without being too matchy-matchy,” says Sam Saboura, a stylist and the author of Real Style.
